Is This One A Root Beer?

Then you'd hate me....I've had enough varieties of "dubonnet red" to morph them into Merlot, Vampire, and one truly gorgeous deep DEEP red (just ask jdlizard).

The "silver" can go from a deep gray with striking black streaking to one I just listed as nearly pewter, or 50 shades of gray...

Now you're just rubbing it in!

But dang that was a gorgeous red Esty!

And I'd certainly call the OPs SJ a Root beer. Very lovely coloring.

Here is my favorite Root Beer, it's one I'll never let get away from me. It sports a very nice Pendleton Brown ground CI from a 9668. This was written with it prior to a past Fla Pen Posse meet.

It was nearly NOS when I got it, it still had then a Estie stamped factory sac that while it looked and felt new, once I started using modern inks with it, soon had to be replaced. (I think I used it for about 6 months before it died.) It was in such nice shape I've never even polished it. Strangely, I have another Root Beer J that still has it's price band on it but it's been used quite a bit like that.

Another funny is that when I first started with Esties, I didn't like Root Beers. I still generally don't buy Brown pens.

In fact, one of my Mentors here, Toulouse, had a beautiful restored RB he wanted to sell me but I said no thanks.

That is the pen that is still on his (inactive) avatar and that he told me several times he really regrets selling.

For a pen that was originally less than top tier, the Esties sure are beautiful.

What's the rule about color names? Are we limited to using only the manufacturer's designations? Must a new color name gain acceptance in "the community" before it's accepted? How, then, can that Catch-22 happen?

Dunno, but I don't see the 'root beer' as being anything other than a colour variation on the copper. Vagaries of dyes and materials kind of thing. I can find no reference to it as a specific manufactured colour, but I do not have access to some of the info that dealers may have.

SC, I was expecting Red, RED. ;)

What you have there is what some call the Dubonnet Red, after that wine, almost purplish. The closer to Purply like yours,

at least in that pic, the harder IMO to find.

Very nice.

I still think Manalto raises a good point.

Assuming that Esterbrook had a catalogue listing of named colours and patterns, then deviations from this will either follow that convention or, as posited by Manalto, receive a new name approved by general enthusiast convention.

Of course how far from the norm the deviation has to be before qualifying for a shiny new name is somewhat debatable. :D

On my screen, the picture is dead on the color of the pen. Thanks for the intel, Bruce.

The official "Madison Avenue" colors are:

Black

Cobalt Blue

Dawn Gray

Fern Green

Dubonnet Red

Copper

I'm going with Black, Blue, Gray, Green, Red, Copper, and Skunk as the official colors.

Madison Ave was wrong.

I bought it from gweimer about a year ago (?) and it arrived looking like this. I haven't done anything since except use it.

Awww...shucks, y'all. It helps to have some really nice pens to work with. I have a blue streaker right now, getting ready to leave.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
