Sailor Progear Sigma Realo

Hi Ben, buy from any Japanese vendor on rakuten or ebay who has the best price and ships using EMS. I have had parcel force deliver ems articles from japan in just 3 days.

The best price I saw is from a site called Engeika - I wonder if any body has any experience with this particular vendor regarding his/her service and product quality?

I previously brought from the VOICE from Rakuten and J-Subculture for my Pilots and they offered excellent service, products and price - shame they do not stock Sailor ProGear Music or Zoom.

Engeika is a highly regarded vendor. I have bought from him several times, always very pleased with the results.

One thing to be aware of (not with Engeika) is that some vendors in Japan open the pen sleeve to verify it is working and apparently to photograph that. I've had this happen twice from two different vendors out of four total orders. All four pens have been perfect and not a mark or problem but if a sealed plastic sleeve is important you should let them know before ordering.

This Realo is on my someday list, thanks for the review.

For the Sailor Realo pens, I've found that Pen-house has had the widest selection. They even have their own logo'ed shipping boxes :)

I just inked up my pro gear realo with B nib and I must say Sailor does live upto reputation. The nib is smooth and the line width about the same as a Pilot M #15. The pen is a nice size and good balance. Would have preffered a slightly larger pen but this is more than usable for most.

Pleasently surprised with the nib as well. Not a nail as it has been described.

  • 1 month later...

I just received a Sailor 1911 Realo - the Realo with rounded ends. I bought it from amazon USA, but it was sent from Fore Stationery in Japan.

I filled it with Pelikan 4001 blue. 12 hours later it wouldn't write. Turning the piston knob slightly got it going, but it wrote much fatter and wetter than when first filled. I also saw daylight part of the time in the window, which led me to think I hadn't completely filled it. I held it over the bottle and emptied it. It appeared to discharge about 1/2 ml.

I've refilled it with MB blue. It took 0.8 grams (ml).

Regarding smoothness, it has a fairly flat foot (photo attached). Feet like this are usually very smooth. But it felt only fair on Rhodia paper. To my surprise it was smoother on Apica paper. I hadn't realized there was much difference.

The pen came with two cartridges in the box. I've written to Sailor telling this whole story. It will be interesting to see if they reply.

Update 6:00PM Sailor did reply, but they wrote that they do not support consumers and suggested I deal with the retailer. Hah! Most retailers don't know anything about what they sell.

ohh the section well the Realo has a different section parts so I doubt they will fit into the standard but it should fit the realos just fine

if what I assume is true

thank you for posting this. I always wondered what was going on inside the piston.

My 1911 Realo is a perfect writing pen - but I will admit that it lacks a bit of love in the construction. It's almost like using a technical pencil - very functional, but it doesn't catch or hold your attention.

I really don't understand the KOP line with those teensy converters.

What an excellent review. Hari: If you imported this in India did you have to pay any customs duty?

Thanks Steve for giving the link for the purchase.

I had to pay. But I now no longer own this pen, I have sold it on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
