Sailor Progear Sigma Realo

Long name for a pen.

I got this pen a few months back from Japan, but opened it only today to take some pictures. This iteration of the "Professional Gear Realo" was released on Aug, 22, 2013 as per this Sailor page. Realos are piston filled pens. Many have found striking visual similarities between some Sailors and some Montblancs. This Sailor features a clip that to me looks very similar to what is found on the Pelikans. I attempt to document this model and also visually compare it to an early plain black well used and worn M800.

The box is slightly more special than the bog standard profits:

One operation leaflet in Japanese and another pamphlet that i cannot understand.

Still Sealed:

The nibs:

The M800 has a bigger nib, the sections look identical in dimensions, the realo has no section ring to corrode:

The weights, capped and open, of course the M800 is heavy due to the brass connector in the filling mechanism, the Realo is all resin:

I hope readers found this visual comparison helpful.

Cheers!

Thank you Hari for this comparative review. Feel it tends towards a bit of m600 rather than a m800.

I do like their stunning nibs, but have been always on the negative side in terms of sailor's smoothness.

Best,
Sonik

Although I cannot afford either of these elegant pens, I just wanted to say what a great visual comparison you have presented with beautiful photos.

Thanks! I wrote this for you only, so I am glad that you have read it.

In fact, I tried to see which Souveran is closest and I found M800. I don't have a plain M600, only one M650 and I felt that one would not have gone well with this Realo visually.

Reg sailors nibs, i have found that they are quite distinct and of course much different from the late 80s 14Ct nib as on this M800.

This Realo has a 21kt B nib (hence the -620 designation), but the line made is only very slightly fatter than a M on my 14kt nib 1911 profit bought in 2006. The nibs are footed in the typical Sailor fashion and yield super smoothness if held at the correct angle.

I also measured the ink capacity and obtained a real world figure of 0.93ml without jumping through hoops. Just cycled the filler twice in the normal fashion. The piston filler mechanism is OK, cannot be compared in refinement to the Pelikan or even the Pilot CH92. However the piston knob does have the 1/4 turn slack which is a good feature to have.

Best

Hari

Thanks for the pictorial review.

This Sailor is in my radar and was about to splurge on it but I got the FC e-Motion and a couple of Looms and a Basic Mother of Pearl. So on HOLD for some more time. Elegant looking pen indeed.

Regards

:) Thank you ... I Remember Asking you for a review even before the pen WAS Delivered Got the post :) .The Pro-gear Sigma REAlO seems a bit heftier than the normal REAlO (Sigma REAlO somewhat Mimics a black / gold M800, Whereas my returned pro gear realo was closer to a m600). I am a fan of their stunning looking nibs (sadly mine were too geometrically cut) but yes I too felt the piston was a let down in terms of quality & feel. Hope the section screws off like the other realos.

I did not try to unscrew the section Sonik. Reg Piston, it is good only, but not in league of Pelikan, but very few are in league of Pelikan.

the nib should fit any of sailor's 21kt medium sized nibs in short the ones found on the 1911 large...

No don't disassemble your pen .

What I mean is : can the entire nib and grip section be screwed onto the barrel of the 1911 Profit large or the Original PG barrel ?

Lovely pictures Hari. I remember I saw it in August in your collection. Didn't realise its as big as M800.

Enjoy.

Thanks Abhik. I received this Realo only in September. I think you might have seen my zoom nib Progear, it is slightly smaller.

Best

Since the realo is a piston filler, it will not have the nipple to accept the sailor cartridges and will also avoid the metal parts that exist in the normal C/C sailors.

Here is a link to kmpn's blog showing a realo disassembled, a pic from this blog has already been posted by algester.

Thanks for this Hari. I have been contemplating this pairing (well the old style realo and not the sigma, can't see why I would want to pay an extra $30 for what is personally a worse looking pen).

Still haven't decided between the realo or the burnt orange m800. I did hear from Tazio that Sailor does not do the standard realo with the togi nibs anymore.

Edit: Was surprised to see that there is so little difference in uncapped length and even the nibs.

Great comparison Hari, thanks!

Sailor quality is second to none, imo. The only thing I don't understand is why they try to incorporate someone else's design into their pens and put people off. They really need to come up with something original in their low/mid range line up and I think it would be a hit! Otherwise, everyone will remember their designs just as a copy of someone else's.

The pro gear, to me, is a different compared the 1911 which looks identical to the MB. Hence I gravitate more towards the pro gear when I want to buy a Sailor.

When I heard that they were releasing a new model, I was excited only to be disappointed with the worse design.

Hi Steve, thanks! It is evident that you love Sailor, your Sailor PG/Sapporo avatar is unchanged from 2007, IIRC. :) I like Sailor too and a few of my favorite pens are Sailors.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
