Peyton Street Pens in Santa Cruz has some options, including (according to their website) a Waterman 301 in your range. I have bought multiple items from Peyton Street Pens within the past year and have been very satisfied, both with the pens and with PSP's customer service.

Yep. Probably not a sexy BCHR pen but you might get a mid-century Waterman that flexes nicely for low dollars.

You have to be a little lucky though. Which pen flexes, how easy it flexes, and how well the feed keeps up is a (bleep) shoot unless your seller knows about flex.

I have a Sheaffer Statesman with a surprising amount of easy flex that was super cheap. That was just luck of the draw.

I've developed a habit of questioning eBay sellers about the flexibility of their nibs, and I've frequently gotten back useful information.

That said, Peyton Street has really nice, well-priced pens and they're very good at describing the flex of their items.

like always I calculate how much i can spend, then start looking form item near the top price and finally i buy item near twice my budget ( i realllly appreciate high quality)
so now i have to decide between Mercedes Dublo Flexy 14C Om and Waterman W3. Both looks superb

We picked up a lovely little Waterman ringtop in red ripple for $110. It's over your maximum but I mention it because it's a rare color and has a nice gold band on the cap, so it was a relative bargain...if you clean it yourself and install the new sac that it needs. I'm sending it out, so add 30-50 bucks, but at the end one has a pen that some people would sell for three bills. It's useful to know just a little more than the sellers.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
