Dear Friends,

I have been eager to try this ink for some time and I have to say the wait has been absolutely worth it. Please note, despite spending the last 3+ hours trying to capture the actual colour and shading which leans somewhat to the green spectrum (think Noodler's Burma Road Brown), the images are showing NW as being very much on the red side - this is not so in real life (in my experience with this bottle at least). I love the warm orange/ green hues present where shading is observed.

Cleaning: relatively easy but note this ink is saturated and thicker (think Diamine's Sargasso Sea or Penman Sapphire) - thus I would recommend flushing between fills.

Water resistance/proofness: this ink isn't going anywhere any time soon!

I look forward to your thoughts. Enjoy!

Warmest wishes,

Bhavna

A gratuitous close up (no there isn't any sheen)

And finally, the comparisons (and the orange is very much present in the thick of the inky goodness!)

I got this ink 2 weeks ago as a part of ink exchange with a U.S. member.

I like brown inks, and this one hasn't disappoonted me. I have only written 2 pages with it but I'd still say that it's a good brown and some shading is visible even with a Fine nib that I use. I would love to use it in a stub or a broad nib, but I prefer to see my writing and not a page full of ants. :)

I think the first and the second image would look better if rotated counter-clockwise 90 degrees.

Edit: Almost forgot, thank you for reviewing this ink. :)

Hi Dhruv,

The images are correct on my screen, do they appear wrongly oriented on your screen? Thank you for pointing out.

In that case, it must be me. I am viewing the website on the phone, so maybe that has got something to do with it.

Ok, it may be that! But I appreciate you pointing it out, and thank you for your kind words re the review. What pen are you using with this ink?

It was that. :)

Accessed the website on the laptop and the images were displaying correctly. Sorry for the hoax call.

I'm using this ink in Pilot 78G with Fine nib. I think I'll switch to Custom 823 as soon as I finish my current fill of oku-yama. :)

:D Phew, that is a relief, thank you for letting me know. Do share your experience with Walnut in the Custom 823 when you refill!

I tried a sample of Walnut several years ago, and thought it was very dry, and a bit too dark a brown for my tastes. But then I tried it last year in a very juicy Pelikan M400, and it was a completely different experience (previously I think I had it in a pen that was a very dry writer -- you need to put it a wet pen to really get the full experience of how nice Walnut can really be). The permanence is just an added bonus.

Hi Ruth, thank you for that. I totally agree, it is magical in a wet writer and less absorbent paper.

Thank you for the comparison

One comparison worth 14 reviews :)

At least visually

You are very welcome, I am so glad it helped. I find comparisons really useful so have decided from now on to include them wherever possible.

  • 7 years later...

I tried this ink for the 1st time and absolutely love it.

It is a nice dark brown, dark enough to use in place of blue or black ink, even to sign cheques (checks in the USA 😊).

It is fairly wet (in my Parker 51 MKIII which is a little on the wet side) and dries as fast as Noodler's Black. Which is fast enough for normal office use.

That's interesting.  Because my bottle of Walnut is super dry (but tamed the juicy F nib on my Pelikan M400 Brown Tortoise quite nicely).

That's what I had heard -  'dry' and 'long time to dry'. The  Walnut ink I got was neither.

I can't stop using it 😊.

There are (at least) two versions of Walnut. The label changed as well as the colour of the contents. Maybe the properties too?

The OP shows the newer version. The older label on the bottle I have has the fish picture and is the more brown version in my swatches.

Will work for pens...

Now I'm trying to remember which label is on my bottle.  But I definitely have an older formulation (I got it fairly early on in this journey) and mine is definitely the more "brown" version, and not the more "red/orange one".

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
