Pelikan Defect? Please Advise

I may just be silly, but this is the first Pelikan I have bought, and it was an expensive purchase. It is an M805 in blue. There are these dimples, and imperfections in the blue part. They are clearly underneath. Does the streissman pattern just have these odd imperfections, or is this something to worry about?

i cannot judge from the picture but this pattern produced by light on the Binde is inherent in the design. Doesnt look defective.

Someone else with better eyes might spring in soon.

There are "dimples" in my pink M600 that look like bubbles that popped. The clear layer over them makes the barrel surface perfectly smooth despite the appearance. I've decided to view it as character rather than a flaw. :)

The picture is out of focus making it difficult to judge. Can you upload a better picture? These barrels have inherent variety due to the nature of the materials so you'll find variety even amongst pens with the same color binde. I don't see anything that's obviously out of place but better photos will help us be more definitive.

I send one of my Pelikans back because of these things. They told me it is just the place there the parts are linked. (I think my English is too bad to explain it. :lticaptd: )

The thing with the stripes is flat, they roll it and than glue it. And in one place every barrel got one stripe or dimple or some imperfection.

Edit: One of the reasons I dislike the striped design.

  • 1 year later...

I want to know more about this subject. I received my pelikan (4th one) M600 blue/black stripes and it came from Italy and after waiting two weeks, I am a bit disappointed because it has a small horizontal line going against the vertical stripes, covering 3/4 of the circumference of the pen, right above the nib. What should I do? Is this a factory second? the pen is so pretty. Any thoughts anyone?

That's a pretty significant mark. Is it definitely in the plastic, or possibly just some residue on the inner wall of the barrel?

That is a defect. Send the pen back before you ink it or jinx yourself into thinking you can fix it..lol..

M-600's cannot be fully disassembled. Only the nib can be removed. In order to get to the next level where 100% maintenance can be done, you must move up to the M-800 or M1000.

Even if this were an M-800 I would tell you the same thing. Send it back while it's under warranty.

You'll feel much better when you have a replacement in your hand, and are writing up a storm.🙃

That does look like a defect. You should contact the seller right away to discuss it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
