This is a very nice price, indeed. It is so low that I wonder how such a price is possible. I received mine,my first X450, and found it to be an excellent writer.

Of course the US-based "locavore" pen shoppers can always seek-out a dealer who provides "excellent service" and pay 10 to 15 times as much.

I have one of them. It's definitely a Jinhao X450, despite it is a little hard to see it in the description. Mine came with an aligned nib and had no issues with it (probably I was lucky).

What's the catch? You can only order 1 every 10 days.

Methinks that the vendor is using the $,99/X450 as loss-leader, That is to say, offering a low priced item as a lure which will encourage you to look over other merchandise being offered.

Your comment was quite catty. So I decided to respond in Cat.

"Catty", that's a rather imprecise way to describe the style of my comment. How's this to describe your style,"fur-tive"?

In my exoerience the nibs on these are great and smooth right out of the packet.

I have also replaced the Nib with a #6 stub 1.1 from Goulet with excellent results. (no connection with either retailer).

The converter that comes with the X450 isn't great but an International size replacement will work if your initial converter ever fails.

I prefer "laconic", but whatever.

Since you desire more words: Your statement ("Of course the US-based "locavore" pen shoppers can always seek-out a dealer who provides "excellent service" and pay 10 to 15 times as much.") is weirdly aggressive, and dismissive, of other people's buying habits. I say weirdly because of your reference to "'locavore" pen shoppers'--if there does exist a fountain pen equivalent of local foods activists, none of them are going to care where you got your Chinese pen.

Further: there are probably people (you know, like Mont Blanc collectors) who literally don't care if they spend one dollar or fifteen for an X450. For the rest of us, that decision is made on the basis of what that fifteen dollars gets us. In my case, it would get me a pen that I want without having to deal with eBay. And I absolutely point blank refuse to open an eBay account. Other people may have the same reason, or a different reason, or a linear combination of reasons. Whatever the case may be they think the money is worth it--or they wouldn't be handing the money over.

I just got my $0.99 x450 today and I am impressed. I am comparing it to several pens in my collection that cost 200X the cost. If it was lighter; It would be an amazing pen. I hope the build quality lasts like my Pilots & Sailors.

I think of my FPs as my children.

I have tried a few of the black X450's that are running around the $1 mark - but found most of them were poorly made and the ink just flooded out of them.

not all of them but most of them.

X450 in other colours never a problem.

X750 in any colour never a problem

X450 in shiny black - most have failed.

I love these 2 ranges of pens and when I do see them on ebay cheap I find it very hard not to bid.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
