Which Sailor Black Ink Is Included With The Pens?

I’m not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me which black ink cartridges Sailor ships with their new pens. Is it the Sailor Jentle Black, or the Sailor Ultra Black?

I recently purchased a Sailor Pro Gear Slim pen in Pearl Red with a Saibi Togi nib, and didn’t realize it wasn’t coming with a converter. I purchased one separately, but while I was waiting for it to arrive, I inked up the pen with one of the included Sailor cartridges to try out. Of course, it turns out that I really like the black in the included cartridge, and I’d like to be able to purchase more of it, but I don’t read Japanese and can’t tell which black ink was included with my pen.

Can anyone tell me? I’d be much obliged. If it helps, I can take a picture of the plastic the cartridge came in later tonight and post it. If I recall correctly, it does have writing on it. I have no idea if it tells you what ink it is, but I would assume it does.

Thanks!

The kiwaguro cartridges have gold colored kanji and katakana on it. Since this is not the case in your photo, my best guess is the Jentle black ink.

To be honest, I've never tried the cartridges, or the bottle of ink that comes with any pen. I'm not a real fan of black ink.

A collector of inks, currently doing my own ink challenge.

Thank you Algester and wijko!

I'm usually not keen on black inks either, so I was surprised to find I liked it. I probably wouldn't have ever used the cartridge if I hadn't been anxious to try out my new pen, but I'm glad I did.

Anyway, I'm off to buy a bottle of Sailor Jentle Black. :)

A couple drops of water will tell you whether it's Sailor's Jentle ink or their pigmented Kiwa-Guro ink -- the pigmented ink is very waterproof.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
