Best Prices On Pelikan M405?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get my first Pelikan, an M405 in the blue-striated variant. I've read multiple reviews of the pen, and many say they bought it new for less than $200. However, I'm only seeing prices in the high $200's online. Why is there this jump in price, and where should I look to get a good price? Thanks for your time, and have a great day!

The M405 blue is a beautiful pen, I'm sure you will love it.

As for the prices, below $200 I've only seen from abroad. In the U.S. The prices are much higher than that.

Many people seem to buy it from Amazon.de . Sometimes it comes without the box and papers, from what I've heard. I've bought several pens from the site Martiniauctions. There are several options in that site, but you better ask about the box and papers in advance (if that is important for you), because sometimes those are not included too. I don't know if either of these vendors are authorized Pelikan dealers.

The best prices will be found overseas unless you are overseas and subject to the VAT. Pelikans have steadily been increasing in price over the years. I love the M405 in blue. It's a nice look. Is it worth it? Only you can decide that. I say yes but that's just my opinion. Good luck tracking one down.

You can regularly pick up M400/M405 for around 130 Euros (No VAT outside the EU) from Martini Auctions. However, mostly will be delivered in a small Pelikan Cardboard box. Regina from Martini Auctions is a quality seller and one can grab some great deals.

Thanks for the response. Would you say the blue M405 is still worth it at the higher price?

I agree with Sargetalon on this, only you can say if it is worth a higher price for you.

That being said, I have paid more than that ($229) for the M405 Blue striped on massdrop and paid close to $300 for the M400 White tortoise, before I knew of Martini auctions. So, I do think that they are worth it, but that is my personal opinion.

Recently I have learned to look for the better deals. I only make sure that I get the box and papers (even if I have to pay a little bit more, just because I care about that stuff). I don't care about being an authorized dealer, since Pelikans rarely give you any trouble and Pelikan Germany will honor the warranty (although Chartpak/USA won't) - again, that is my personal view and the price is worth the risk for me. However, if you do want an authorized dealer you can still get a very good deal from most vendors in Europe since we don't pay VAT (also Japanese vendors seem to have good price, as mentioned above).

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually figured out that an M805 would be more suitable for my hand-size, and I was able to snag one used for a great price. Thanks once again for the help!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
