Pen Storage/display Box

So I was watching a you tube channel by penhale talking about all sorts of things that interest me mostly guns and fountain pens and travel coffee mugs.

I was looking at his review of a leather fountain pen storage box and it was north of 400 US dollars. No way I said bit too rich for my blood, so I popped on Amazon.com to look for a cheap leather display case. Found one for 40 bucks. Started looking at the reviews and stumbled upon this review:

"Very solid looking and substantial but don't buy it all of my gold vermeil and plated pens tarnished and lost their plating ater a few months in this box Three of the pens were Mont Blanc and Delta worth thousands Absolutely don't buy this if you value your pens"

They must have treated the leather with some "interesting" chemicals.

I think I am going to go bother my grandpa to make ma display case out of nice solid wood without varnish or stain.

I was also looking at cigar cases as an alternative to storage but same fear of chemicals in the leather make me uncomfortable.

I'd be tempted to use a wax finish, like you would for food-safe wooden turnings, myself. Mahoney's comes to mind immediately, it's a great walnut-oil-and-wax finish, totally foodsafe, etc.

If you want a leather pen case look for Veg Tanned leather which is quite safe around metal. Even modern chrome tanned leathers should be safe now as the processes have been changed although this may depend on the country of origin.

Michael,

That is great to know! As a Leica user and leather addict, I have had concerns over using leather on and around my cameras.

Monz was instrumental, among others, who rejuvenated my interest in Fountain Pens and now that I am here, you have taught me so much about pen cases! So much that one day soon I will ask you to commission a single pen case for me just like his! And the rabbit hole certainly leads to multiple pen cases. Display cases. And a lot of joy!

:-))

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
