Leo Tolstoy Questions

Hey can anyone answer a few questions for me please.

1. What is the size of the fountain pen, is it 146/147 or 149 size, perhaps somewhere in between?

2. I know the price from fountain pen hospital but will the price be similar at the boutiques?

3. I will be traveling to Chicago and will have a limited time to inspect, demo and purchase so i cannot wait for it or ship it, Is it likely to be available for purchase around September 17th-19th in that particular boutique?

1. It will be in the 146 size and use the #6 sized nib. It may have slightly different dimensions than a 146, but it is based on that pen size.

2. MB boutiques in the US charge full boat MSRP. If you want to save order from FPH, another authorized vendor in the US or some vendors in Europe who will ship over here.

3. Yes, but best to call ahead before you go. Sometimes stock sells out. They will not have a full range of nibs, but you can buy and immediately send it to Germany for service. The boutique will ship it free and then ship it back to you.

I have heard (from boutique associate) that they are suppose to be available the second week of September. Of course no guarantee, and could shift one way or the other. I have one ordered through Bryant @ Chatterley's as he usually has great prices, and he ships very quickly. He has said September for delivery, but haven't heard any updates as of yet. Hoping earlier rather than later in the month (money burning hole in pocket).

The Tolstoy 1868 pen is between the 146 and 149 in maximum barrel width. The maximum cap width is closer to that of the 149 and does not taper like the latter does.

My overall visual impression is that the Tolstoy pen is much more like the 149 size-wise. That's where it ends...

I hope the picture helps.

I think its impossible to answer your 3rd question. It depends how many pens the store is able to get and whether they have waiting list for them.

I have the standard Tolstoy, not the LE, I can tell you on my pen the serial number is engraved on the cap.

Thanks. I just discovered it at its piston knob along the ring.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
