Looking To Go Gold

After some recent thought I have decided that I want to graduate to my first 14k nib. So I've recently made enough money to get me one of two pens: the Custom 74 and the #3776. Now here is the catch of my particular conundrum: Which one do I get FIRST? I will be getting BOTH pens before the year is up but one I will be able to get in the next couple days and the other one my parents will get me at the end of the semester if I manage a 3.0+ GPA (yes I am one of those people that is easily coerced by prospect of receiving shinie s, sue me). Both these pens on Amazon are $90> and I'm looking at a soft medium on the platinum and a music on the pilot. Thoughts?

You do mean Soft-Medium on the Pilot and Music on the Platinum, right? The 3776 comes in Fine-Medium which is an excellent width for daily writing so there's that possibility too... Music is nice if tyou write music or are into caligraphy - not so much a daily driver , so I would probably save that for later and get the 74 first to write all semester with. All the best at school!

I have a Custom Heritage 91, bought on Amazon, with an FM nib. Had to buy the CON-70 converter separately, but I saved some extra money on the pen. They had advertised a Custom 74, and when I complained about getting the wrong pen but agreed to keep it, they refunded $15 on the price.

As far as the pen itself goes, it's excellent. Very similar to the Custom 74, but with flattened ends on the cap and barrel. It would be a good choice if you can get one at a good price with the nib you want.

I think a lot of those pens use the same 14K nib, so the difference is cigar vs flat top, dimensions of the body and specific looks... Pilot has rock solid quality control, so any of them that appeal to you would do the job nicely.

OK cool, I guess I'll do the Pilot (I'll have to decide which design I like best and hope I can get that design in a soft nib, a lot of the Pilots have a 3-6 week backorder wait time) first and get the Platinum at the end of the semester. TBH I would have immediately gone for a Falcon or a VP but my tuition costs say I shouldn't spend more than $100 on a pen at the moment. Thanks for the help.

Hi,

+1 for the C74 + SFM.

It should broaden your experience with everyday writer nibs that have a bit of character, rather than be a 'toy'.

Remember that it is Soft nib - not a flexi nib - so go easy on it.

Enjoy!

Yes, I am a big Pilot fan. Make sure you also pick up the Con 70 converter for the C74. Not all Pilots (like the VP, E95s, etc) will take it, but if the pen will take it, you should definitely opt for it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
