What Is The Best Ink In Each Color?

DrDebG

Recommended Posts

I am about to leave my humble dwelling and embark on a cross country journey in my RV (motorhome) and will be gone for several months. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure out which pens and ink I am going to take. I can't take it all as I have very limited space. I have pretty much figured out which pens, but now I have to determine which inks.

I think I have decided that I will take 7 bottles of ink with me, and no samples. Since I like variety, I am considering my favorites in each of the color categories:

Black: None - not a big black fan

Blue: Sailor Nioi-sumire (actually this is more of a periwinkle), or Waterman Serenity Blue

Purple: Rohrer & Klingner Cassia, or DeAtramentis Pearl Violet

Green: Rohrer & Klingner Verdura

Turquoise: Waterman South Seas (i.e Waterman Inspired Blue)

Brown: Waterman Absolute Brown

Orange: Noodler's Apache Sunset or Diamine Autumn Oak

Red/Pink/Burgundy: Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Bordeaux or Caran d'Ache Divine Pink

If you had to choose just one ink in each of the color caterories above, which one would it be?

Blue - Private Reserve American Blue (I'm a convert!)

Green - Diamine Salamander

Orange - Diamine Terracotta

Pink - pass

Purple - Sailor Ink of Witch

Red - Diamine Red Dragon

Turquoise - Noodler's Navajo Turquoise (but only for mixing it hurts my retinas otherwise)

I too love such a topic. Especially "today's choice" would be....

Black - Dark Matter (simply because it's not a blackest black)

Brown - Grand Canyon

Blue - S.T.Dupont's Bleu Nuit

Green - White Forest

Orange - Lamy's Coral (unfortunately --may I say stupidly -- in Germany only available as carts)

Pink - none (okay, CdA's Divine Pink if I went through Vegas)

Purple - Eclipse

Red - Wild Srawberry

Turquoise - Visconti's

That's it... for today....

Orange - Diamine Deep Dark Orange

Pink - Sheaffer Pink (cartridge only)

This is really interesting. (I am not even going to complain about all the missing colors - I finally got it all pared down.)

Black: Sailor Kiwa-guru for a true black, but I prefer grey, so more likely Diamine Graphite. Iroshizuku Kiri-same if I end up with ESSRI in blue.

Blue: ESSRI or Diamine Denim

Purple: This is super tough because I'm in a purple phase. Since I have a bunch of darker colors, I'm going with L'artisan Pastellier Lilas if I want something soft, or Imperial Purple for something bright.

Green: KWZI Green Gold.

Green: Diamine Evergreen.

Green: Sailor Tokiwa-matsu

Turquoise: L'artisan Pastellier Turquoise

Teal: KWZI IG Turquoise or Eau de Nil or Noodler's Air Corp Blue Black

Brown: L'artisan Pastellier Inti

Gold:L'artisan Pastellier Ocre Jaune

Orange: Iroshizuku Yu-yake

Red: Diamine Matador or KWZI Cherry

Pink: Sailor Peche or Diamine Carnation, depending on the trip.

Red Violet: De Atramentis Roses

Blue violet: Sargasso Sea

Burgundy: Skip - let's not go overboard.

I have my own opinions on this matter, of course. I think there are only six colors for writing: black, blue-black, purple, blue, green, and brown. For my purposes, the best in each are:

Black: Noodler's Heart of Darkness
Blue-Black: Pilot Blue Black
Purple: De Atramentis Aubergine
Blue: Noodler's Blue
Green: Diamine Sherwood (though I might consider something else if I ever use the entire bottle)
Brown: Iroshizuku Yama-Guri

Okay, I admit that Noodler's Red-Black, which is a burgundy, is a workhorse ink for me. But I didn't buy my bottle, and if I ever run it out, I won't buy one then.

Markup Honorable Mentions:
Red: Sheaffer Skrip
Turquoise: Sheaffer Skrip. Navajo Turquoise may take its place should I ever use the whole bottle.
If I ever wind up with some orange, it'll go in this category also.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
