Great Service From Komamono-Honpo A Global Rakuten Seller

This is a first of four reviews of different Rakuten stores. Like they say: Weak Yen; Strong Dollar means shopping is entertainment!

I placed an order for several Pilot Somes Cases (pictured below) at pricing that was almost 40% less than eBay sellers. I love these pen cases. The leather is exquisite and the finishing is professional. Even the zip around case can hold three King of Pens and a Midori Passport sized notebook

The order was confirmed by email and then I reconfirmed the shipping charges, which were reasonable considering the package got to the US in a couple of days!

Here are the items I purchased and the store links:

Thanks. I have ordered from him too. A stash of 11 Sailor inks.

He shipped the items on 12 August and they arrived here in India on 14 August. Still stuck in customs though, can't blame him for that.

Stevesurf, is the brown leather case in your final picture "solid" - by which I mean is the leather covering plastic or similar?

Yes, on both, but always send them an email checking actual stock immediately before ordering. Most of Rakuten's shops do not have real time stock status and they will also send you a total including shipping for approval, so answer your email :)

I believe the leather is bonded to a very high quality suede-like material that feels also identically to suede leather. The outer surface is gorgeous leather.

Please keep in mind that these are made by a famous leather artisan, Somes.

Oh Steve, I see more Japanese pens and ink in my future.

Sailors ink were for less than $48 when I ordered.

And the 50ml Iroshizuku bottle is the cheapest I have seen on the Internet.

How long does it usually take before you get the mail with the shipping cost? I'm getting close to 24h now.

Dhruv Sood, thank you for confirming that! I took the plunge and ordered the Shin Kai I've been wanting, for less than $10.00 a bottle how could I not? I hope the shipping doesn't make up for it!

You're welcome Katherine. :)

I suggest that you take small packet shipping which they have just introduced. If you have ordered only 1 bottle, the weight should be close to 350gms which will be accepted by the cheaper shipping method.

I wasn't happy with the freight price I received.

They calcualted 700 grams EMS, which is JPY 2200 (USD 18,50), 50% more than the price for the bottle of ink.

I replied to them that I will only accept 350 grams and Small Package Service, JPY 690.

Let's see what the answer.

Don't quote me on that weight. A full Iroshizuku bottle is 330gms. So add some packing material to it which may vary.

Never take EMS for a single bottle. Japanese and Indian EMS are the cheapest in the world but still not worth it for a single bottle.

Other online retailers usually charge freight for 300 g. Maybe they add a bit of the shipping cost into the item price.

But 700 g is just because they want to make more profit, since they are selling the bottles so cheap. I can't see any other explanation.

They clearly sate in the sales information that all amounts will be in Yen and nothing else.

Todays exchange rate: JPY 1.00 = USD 0.0085

JPY 1880.00 = USD 15.80

JPY 2930.00 = USD 24.65

Your PayPal-account will be charged in JPY.

Ok, thank you for helping me! That's still less than what it's selling for on Amazon even with free prime shipping.

Don't forget that you might have to pay import duties and fees.

I don't know what the rules are in the US, but here in Europe the customs are quite zealous.

Hi, this is my fifth order from a Rakuten shop this year and I have not had any additional charges or delays with any of these orders. The only delays I ever endure are occasionally from individual sellers from the UK and EU and even at that, there are no additional duties.

With the great ratings and consistent shipping from K-H, I believe we're good with this shop!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
