Um...Really?...

Maybe the economy is really doing better, or there is something here I don't understand (which is certainly possible), but, really...

At least it does say that it is in "better than average condition". Maybe that justifies the price? I think I'll let someone else get this one-:)

Bizarro, even for that ebay seller.

listing now updated to $15...

Dang, if he had kept it at the higher price, I would have had a shot at it. Now, everybody and his brother will out-bid me. And so it goes.

Although I won't buy it simply on the grounds that it's not even free shipping! :)

I have mixed feelings about The Douglas, but a lot of the military leaders were somewhat overbearing. Something like that needs some verification beyond the personalization on the cap.

The certificate does not say the pen belonged to McArthur it says the title is Douglas McArthur's pen and that it is original and unique. That is not proof enough to suit me. The cap is Fhish scale.

I hope the seller doesn't lower the price to the point where the shipping is more expensive. Ha.ha.ha.

Yup, I just gotta have the same pen the old Doug used. Cheap at twice the price. I'm also looking for the reed that Caesar used to write his commentaries. I should be able to find that on e-bay easy enough.

MacArthur hadn't been in the US at that point for about 15 years, if I recall correctly. During the first part of 1942 he had his hands full in the Philippines ("I shall return," May, 1942). Then Australia, then island hopping with Halsey for 2-3 years (which may explain the fish scale cap).

It might maybe could be that someone had this made as a gift for him, but like many gifts given to Presidents or other famous people that does not necessarily mean that he ever used it. Could be even Parker did it. But there's no way of knowing for sure without other documentation.

Excuse me, I have some engraving to do. I have George S. Patton's Morrison Patriot Army set here. Seems he forgot to personalize it. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
