U.s. Traveling Notebook (Small Scale)

I have had a passing interest in Tojusi's European traveling notebook (five participants, round robin, traveling across Europe). Although someone suggested I move across the pond so I could also participate, that seemed like an extreme proposition. I see that the European journal has succeeded in making it first full round to all participants, and is starting a second round. This gives my romantic heart some hope that another journal could also successfully make the rounds, but this time in the States. I was gifted a journal back in December to use for an upcoming international jaunt, but I would rather use it for this purpose.

I am proposing a traveling U.S. journal, slightly modifying Tojusi's rules below:

  • Myself and four others (five participants in total)
  • Participants must have an address in the U.S.
  • Language is English
  • Do not commit to this notebook unless you can afford the time and money - time to write, money to send the notebook onwards
  • To participate, one must be committed to keeping the notebook moving. As a rule of thumb, there should be no more than two weekends between receipt and sending it on (yes yes, real life can intrude, but a rule of thumb)
  • There is no set theme - you can write about yourself, your day, your city, your dreams and aspirations, share poetry or short prose, make drawings. Perhaps even to add clippings or what not. The paper might not be suitable for water color like treatments though. Show off your handwriting, calligraphy, or inks, or all of them. The world is your oyster - you are effectively communicating with four strangers, do what you want.
  • You can write several entries before sending it on - of whatever length - within reason, of course, plus note the time table above.
  • If you have the possibility to scan the latest entries, good - but not a requirement (a precaution if the notebook goes missing). I will try to scan it when it comes back to me, before it goes to the next round.
  • In other words, let's try to do several rounds of this with the same participants.
  • Once the book is full, I will randomly determine which of the five of us gets to keep the physical notebook (all get the scans). If we still want to continue, let's start another notebook.

If the above sounds reasonable to you, sounds like fun, and you want to commit, please PM me. First four to firmly commit get in. The notebook will start moving within two weekends from the date I have four committed participants.

Sharon, I am delighted to have inspired you! Actually, I am surprised that there aren't more of these small circle traveling journals.

My journal is actually six participants - myself plus five others.

The first complete round took four months. I made some entries after 20 April, sent the notebook on 27 April, and received it back on 19 August.

Good luck to this US notebook! Please keep us updated of the progress.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi Sharon - have you already started with your notebook? I wrote my new entries in my European nitebook, scanned everything and sent it today on its second round.

Sorry I missed this earlier! It sounds interesting, and I would really like to participate in a similar group if anyone else is going to start another.

Hi, Tojusi - we started the notebook last month. It is on its way right now to the 4th member of this little group, with one more after that to complete the first round. several of us have been in previous exchanges that did not complete a round, so we are anxious to see this one get round the country.

Thanks for the well wishes, I.M. So far, so good!

Abstract49, I haven't had anyone else show interest in doing another one - yet. Let's see if your post gets things stirred up!

Just an update - the small scale notebook has completed its first round to all participants and is back in my hands. It will go out for a second round sometime in the next two weeks. Hurrah!!!!!!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
