I'm loving this thread! My kids an nephews are really into the concept of the pen, and I'd like to introduce them...without compromising any of my writing sticks.

About 75 percent of the oens recommended here don't take standard internationals...and I'm scratching my head on this, so I'm gonna second the hooded Jinhao 599.

There's the Nemosine Singularity, with nibs ranging from XF to a medium cursive italic, but those are five over the OP's price point.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Baoer 388, in either black or flighter.

You can find this in bulk and get the price down to less than $4 each, delivered.

You may have to adjust the nib to get the ink flow as you want it. But hey, the pen is cheap.

For a piston pen, try the Dollar 717 pen. I think it is even cheaper.

Buy a pack of 10 for $25 = $2.50 each, delivered.

And if you buy enough, you could probably get the price even lower.

BTW, this is the same pen that the SF Pen Show will be using for the ink sampling. One of the group took one of the pens on a business trip to test it, and it worked just fine.

As far as I'm concerned this is the new, cheap workhorse pen.

Thanks for the link, that was some hilarious reading. A little excerpt from the description:

Number of Yen to expensive, extravagant floats using a fountain pen, and usually do not use pompous words and sentences

A Carpe diem mood, using a disposable pen, how much time to cool our contents become rarefied and lonely

Tend to be. But the design really! Engaging their funny nature and is a favorite pen and eye

Dare to be floated, it'll be hilarious and fun feel.

Introduce the thing, enjoy the fun and cheerful mood to use fountain pens. My favorite color

You can put the ink used in a variety of applications! A fashionable demonstrator ( air permeability

Akira axis ) fountain pen is. Turn the knobs butt shaft type , so in the same axis books

Has nice features like a pen that inhalation of ink to the body can be.

$3.00 I found in Hobby Lobby. It accepts International standard short cartridges AND stores an additional one inside the barrel. Soft writer. Travel enabled! I suppose it could be used as an eyeropper also. Got it on my desk for daily use among others and never fails to write. It has a fine nib and I don't think there is a choice.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
