Today I've completed and sent 2 PhD applications so I'm a nervous wreck, but I've also received 3 long-due letters from a dear pen friend so I'm making an effort at calming myself down by listening to relaxing music and writing things, such as quotes and replies to other letters, just to help with the emotional backlash.

This is probably the last time I'm using this pen for a while, the Wing Sung 618, since the nib is fairly scratchy, drier than a hooded nib has any right to be, and has a tight sweet spot because duh hooded nib. Also, this ink is very very dry in this pen, doesn't make for a pleasant writing experience. This combo found me on a bad day to pick a fight.

Great color, though this pen's no good and doesn't show off this color properly.

Hello again, RoyalBlueNotebooks,

Usually Scabiosa (or any iron-gall ink) requires a fairly wet pen. In addition, my Fabriano EcoQua is on the dry side. Try your generic 1.1 with a wetter ink and more absorbent notebook, see if it is still a dud. If you have a Noodler Ahab, put a Goulet 1.1 nib in it and try out your Scabiosa. The Ahab's feed is designed to be wetter than most.

Best of luck,

Yours,
Randal

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

Randal, hello! I did know that iron gall inks are drier than dye-based ink, but I had (foolishly) hoped that the Jinhao feed would have kept up. Nope. Disappointment all around. I've inked up a Wing Sung where I swapped the nib and feed with a Pilot Pluminix, and it seems that the ink flow is much better, though I need to prime the need every couple of days. Iron gall feel so dry but their shading is top-notch.

Jinhao 992 F (I'm not re-inking this pen any time soon, the feed is disappointing).

Fred, do you think the others are on vacation? There has been less activity in the writing sub-forums these past couple of months.

You don't want to see my handwriting, and I don't want you to see it either.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
