I was combing through Amazon today and saw that they have the Hero 616 10-pack from multiple sellers (Fulfilled by Amazon) for $8.97 shipped with Prime.

Here: http://www.amazon.com/pcs-Classic-Fountain-Hero-colors/dp/B00D9FBDQS/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&srs=2593469011&ie=UTF8&qid=1439516490&sr=1-1

According to CamelCamelCamel, it's the third lowest price for this item in a year, with the lowest being $7.28 just a few days ago, but with overseas shipping. :)

That's even cheaper than prices on the 'Bay, plus you can bypass the overseas shipping wait.

I hope they're not fakes! I'll be getting mine in a couple days, so we'll see. :D I've been out of the FP loop for a while now, but these bring back great memories and it's always a pleasure when I do ink mine up. Can't wait to have more in my hands!

Cheers!

Whoa. Did y'all just clear out Amazon's inventory of these? Haha I just went back to check stock and there only 1 left as of this post versus the 15 or so when I had ordered mine. :P

Got my set today.

I want to say that they are counterfeit - they look different than the 616 that I have from the past.

The bladder shield thingie reads "Hong Qiang," a brand I've never seen before.

Amazon did right by me when I brought this up.

I did ink up one of them out of curiosity and it's holding up well so far. Somehow it feels a little flimsier. The nib is okay - there's a slight burr on the only one I had inked up that needs some smoothing. Other than that, they're alright. I still like my real 616 more - it just feels sturdier. :)

Interesting! I ordered a pack out of curiosity, we'll see what shows up in my mailbox.

Fountain Pens: Still cheaper than playing Warhammer 40K

I saw this, and went in just a few minutes ago.. I bought the 10 pack for $7.28 with free standard shipping. Since I am close to one of the large warehouses, orders usually arrive in a few days.

Haven't used the 616, but have read a lot about them here. At this price, I'll gladly try a package. Makes my Chinese purchases look expensive!!

If you want them, the time is NOW..

The reason why I posted the $8.97 price is because those come from the Amazon warehouses while the $7.xx are coming from China with a long estimated ship date. I've had great luck with buying and quickly receiving from Japanese sellers despite their equally long estimated ship date, but not so much with the Chinese ones.

If you get a legitimate package though, they're quite fun. While I was half-expecting my purchase to be counterfeit, I was still a little bummed. I really like my Hero 616s. I've had bad luck with the fake ones, but the ones I received are Jolson up a lot better than in years' past.

I still haven't dug up any information about the Hong Qiang ones that I had received. They're doing alright though.

Clips well, writes smoothly, fills easily. The plastic feels only a TAD more delicate than the Hero I have of yesteryear... My main concern is whether or not it will develop leaks like the horrible fake ones I'd received many years ago. So far so good.

My experiences with shipments from China has been mostly very good. I received most of them sent air mail, and received from 7 to 10 days after notification of shipment. That seems fast to me, as I live in New England, a LONG way from China. The last one was slow, took almost 3 weeks. I think this was from a small merchant, who may not have had stock available on the 3 pens I ordered. It still arrived in good order, in the usual Chinese envelope, with the shrink wrapped goodies.

I consider all of the transactions to be great ones. They all arrived well before the expected date, with the one exception mentioned, and that was just a couple of days into the date range expected. Considering the average price of the pens, and the quality of most of them, it's a great resource. Of course, I've scoured this forum for all the pros and cons of the various models. I've had the best luck with the Duke pens, followed closely by a virtual tie between Hero and JinHao, and their various other identities, such as Wing Sung, etc.

I understand it is very cheap, but why does anyone need 10 of these pens?

Ink testing, giveaways, carry-ons, and for anything and anywhere you would prefer to use an inexpensive and reliable writer.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I have one of these -- someone in my local pen club ordered a pack and was giving them away. Mine writes okay but the nib is scratchy (I've tried smoothing it but apparently not enough). It's a $2 pen and feels like one. It was okay with iron gall ink in it (specifically FPN member Pharmacist's Terra Incinerata.

Personally I think the idea of doing a knockoff/fake 616 is sort of a mind-boggling concept, but it's obviously being done....

I will say that I have a few Chinese pens that are much better quality. The Jinhao 599 is a decent knockoff of a Lamy Safari (I have one of the metal-bodied ones); the Wing Sung 237 and Guanleming Accountant are pretty nice, and both seem to be better quality than their $5 price tag would suggest.

I have to admit, I'd seriously consider getting these pens for use with some of the more "radioactive" inks like Bay State Blue and such. They're good for inks that you're not comfortable using with more expensive pens for whatever reason.

While the ones I got were not Hero Brand, but rather an unknown Hong Qiang brand, they've proven to good up well this past week of carry. :)

I'd inked up a few of them and the nibs have even smooth. There was just that first one that had a slight burr but that was taken care of - the others were not in need of any tuning. I just took them apart, flushed them of manufacturing gunk, reassembled, inked, and they were all good to go.

:)

I hope anybody else who went in on this has as good luck as I have.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
