One Dollar Special On Small Hero 616 Including Postage.

I was looking for a decent fountain pen that was cheap enough that I wouldn't care too much if I lost it when traveling. I found an unbelievable deal for a small size Hero 616 from a company that is known for selling the real thing, not a lower quality fake, called Yespen.

The price was exactly one dollar for the pen plus shipping from China. It just reached me after 10 days. It's a famous copy of a Parker, but not in the jumbo size, but a smaller version. It writes very smoothly and is definitely a real Hero 616. The most obvious difference between it and a Parker 21, is that the cap on the Hero 616 is a bit too tight, compared to the perfect fit of the Parker. But, what do you want for one dollar, including postage? Assuming the postage plus packaging is worth at least 50 cents, you are paying only 50 cents for a very decent pen. Almost unbelievable.

The title of the Ebay sale is: $1 OFFER Real HERO 616 Fountain Pen Small Vintage Hooded Nib Golden Black Barrel

Most Chinese pens when not mentioned will have a Chinese F nib, similar to a Lamy XF, or even finer.

This could be a problem to some people.

When I have a choice, I usually get a Chinese M nib. It is more to my liking.

But for a carry-around or travel pen, it is good fit.

I actually like it even finer than the one I got, but it's still OK for me. I just like fine nibs. For example, I bought a Cross Century around 30 years ago with an M nib and I had the A.T. Cross company exchange it for an XF, which suits me perfectly.

I received this one-dollar pen today - 9 days after I placed the order in eBay.

To my surprise, this pen writes very smoothly. The line width is about the same as my Pilot CH92 FM nib.

I have had good experiences with the HERO 616. A pack of 10 for $15, shipping included, can yield seven or eight good writers. How much was your shipping ?

Shipping is free for this one-dollar pen, Hero 616.

Pen + shipping = $1 USD.

How can the seller make any money?

I think it is a promotional offer. The same seller charges more for packages of 3 than for the single item that has free shipping. I think supermarkets call this a loss leader.

Thank you for letting me know! I got 2 of them, I intent to give them to friends as an intro to fountain pens.

I bought from the same seller a 616 Jumbo some months ago. They were very friendly and they offered me a discount on my next purchase from them. They definitely sell legitimate Hero pens.

Do not think in terms of Western capitalism and "profit motive". It does not apply. The "seller" in not the seller, but merely an outlet. The real seller is the PRC government. Governments don't have to "make money".

As our chums in Murica are wont to say, "I'll buy that for a dollar". I've never had the small size before.

edit - actually, this blatant consumerism sickens me. Is that what I'm about? Nice try, world order!

I ordered 2 on the 28th of August, got them on the 8th of September. So all in all, not bad on shipping time. They are actually pretty nice pens.

Life isn't always what you make it. Sometimes it just falls in your lap and you have to deal with it.

Update: The one dollar special I first wrote about is still there, but the Yespen store changed its name to Mentag:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-OFFER-Real-HERO-616-Fountain-Pen-Small-Vintage-Hooded-Nib-Golden-Black-Barrel-/391210544853?hash=item5b15f72ed5

My pen is still going strong since my posting. One small issue came up. The barrel screwed on so tight that when I tried to unscrew it by holding the hood, the hood itself wound up coming off! I solved this by first re-aligning the nib and feed, so that it was centered on the hood after screwing the hood back on. To avoid the barrel being on too tight in the future, I put a little silicon grease on the barrel thread. So far so good.

One consequence is that I feel less tempted to think of even $5 or $10 pens as a bargain. If I can get something this decent for a buck (including postage), it's hard to find an equally good deal out there.

not sure how genuine this is though....

If you stick to Men tag as the seller and pay one dollar, you should get what I referred to.

That is the link I clicked...

The pen is $1 however for me there is a $1.90 shipping fee (though I'm looking at it from Australia so there may be the postage difference for different countries?)

I think different rates for different countries is the answer. I just clicked on the link and the pen is 99¢ and it has "free shipping." I am not in Australia.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
