Are you sure the price is right? On Pelikan UK site the price of this pen is marked as 90 pounds.

That's with the steel nib.

No, that's no clarification. The Pelikan UK site has it with a gold nib at 135 pounds.

How on earth can it be $329 in the US?

The UK site has a steel nib version at 90 pounds and a gold nib version at pounds 135.

Here the gold nib version is at USD 329.

It is in that context that the question was raised, is USD 329 the right price?

I believe the question to be still outstanding.

I agree that that's a lot of money for an M205, but since the M205 with a 14k nib is not a standard Pelikan offering, I assume retailers like Nibs.com and Pelikan Pens UK have leeway in terms of what they charge for the combination. Nibs.com charges $192 for spare M400/405 nibs. Add that to the base price of the M205 and you get to $330. I imagine they're betting on the fact that people will find ordering a pen that's been checked and tweaked by John Mottishaw more attractive than ordering the M205 with 14k nib from the UK for considerably less money?

That is most useful erm ... clarification.

I have the M200 Café Creme.

Thinking of buying this Amethyst.

Steel nib version though.

My thoughts exactly. There is nothing wrong with the steel on these pens. Nice to have options though and John's nibs are great if you can afford them.

I think the pricing should raise an eyebrow at least

Thanks to everyone for the comments on this. Just thought we should add that, as an authorized Pelikan retailer, we're selling this pen and nib at the lowest price we're allowed by the U.S. distributor, and they in turn have no input into the pricing in other markets. Hope that helps clarify any questions, and one way or another, we think this is a great looking pen...

I've ordered my Amethyst with gold nib from Pelikan Pens UK for £135 (£90 + £45). That includes 20% VAT which is automatically deducted if you are buying from outside the EU.

They also offer nib testing and adjusting FOC.

Their usual price for M400/M405 gold nibs is £68 (again inclusive of 20% VAT). IIRC I think that is pretty close to missingpen.de price.

For delivery outside UK & Europe orders over £50 will incur a postage charge of £12.95 and will automatically be posted with insurance and tracking. Postage over £20 in UK is free.

Time to talk to them and try to get reasonable prices.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
