Off Topic Question: What is the purpose of the cardboard separator? I realize you take it off before using the pen, but why put it on there in the first place?

On Topic Comment: Having ordered an Al-Star LE (from Goulet) today, I'm confident it won't be fake. I'm equally confident I won't have it in hand as quickly as I'd like. ;)

Off Topic Answer: the separator prevents the nib assembly from being unintentionally screwed into the body of the pen, which in turn prevents the cartridge inside the pen from being perforated. No separator = the potential for a horrible inky mess in transit!

I appreciate the explanation. I didn't realize the pens came with the cartridge inside the barrel. Makes sense now.

My latest Safari Al-Star from The Writing Desk did NOT have print on both sides of the cardboard spacer.

I doubt it is a fake.

Some of my Safari's came from the Writing Desk, with zero doubts that they're Lamy Manufacture Safari's. I would readily buy from them again = very good service.

The single example of the poor quality spacer was that it was loose, not tightly compacted. This was not the only obvious clue.

This issue requires level headed reporting so that those new to Safari make an accurate choice for a successful outcomes. A small saving is not saving at all on fraudulent items with intent to deceive and disappointing poor performance, and time involved in rectifying, if possible. Spend the extra 5 dollars and have 20 years of reliable performance = easy.

I just received a charcoal Safari from an Amazon seller today.

It didn't seem to feel the same as my other ones, the quality didn't seem to be the same.

then after reading about the instructions mine said founfain pen.

So does this mean there also are Lamy 2000 fakes? This founfain pen clearly shows the manual is fake, but why do they even produce fake lamy 2000 manuals if they don't sell fake lamy 2000s? Have anyone ever come across a fake one?

I went to eBay yesterday in search of vintage Safaris and ran across a TON of Safaris being shipped from China, i.e. seller was in China and based on background in the pictures, appeared to be mostly the same seller. My immediate assumption given the Chinese reputation and the sheer number of hits, was that these were fakes. I'm guessing that someone there figured out how to make fakes and is using eBay to sell them. Let the Buyer beware.

I realize I'm stereotyping, but.......

Not really, all fake pens I've spotted on eBay come from China, Taiwan and India. Yet, all Lamy fakes I've seen are Safari pens. Never seen or heard of a Studio, 2000 or any other model fake.

Is the top one genuine?

Top one is genuine.

The engraving is sharper.

Touch the material of the pen.

Scope all the engraving part like "LAMY"

Real one will be Sharp one. (cos it is expensive to produce sharp image)

Since I have no basis for comparison, I hope that you will be able to help me. I received my Lami Safari from Amazon today. I have never owned a Lami pen before, so I don't know what to think. This is my first fountain pen in about 20 or 30 years (other than a Pilot Varsity , so I am a basic newbie. My main concern with the pen is that all of the edges are VERY rough and sharp! It feels like I could cut my finger just holding the pen! Is this typical? There is no way that this roughness shows up in photos (believe me I tried!). The only documentation that came with the pen was the warranty. Is this is an indication of Lamy quality (or lack of quality in their finishing)? If it is a counterfeit, I will definitely send it back to Amazon. What do YOU think?

There is no part of your pen that looks counterfeit. Lamy Safaris come in different packaging. The one I bought for my spouse had none.

Edits:

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The nib, packaging, and cap all look genuine. Look at the breather hole on the nib, as it is correctly aligned. Additionally, the mold lines on the cap look crisp.

It's a little hard to tell from your photos, but I'm suspicious: the finish on your Lamy Safari *does* look pretty rough. Genuine or not, the edges shouldn't be sharp.

Something else to check: does the Warranty describe your Safari as a fountain pen or a "founfain pen"? Though I haven't seen this myself, that's apparently another giveaway when it comes to fakes - and it seems that Amazon have inadvertently found themselves facilitating the sale of these...

Yours is less "fake" than the fake Lamy Safari I recently bought from the eBay seller BLIN*.

My breather hole on the nib is much forward to the tip than yours.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
