Private Reserve Ink was founded by Terry W. Johnson and Susan Schube in the workroom of Avalon Jewelers/Gallery in Zionsville, IN, as an addition to the fountain pen department. Terry's vision was simple... "Why not have fountain pen ink in a rainbow of colors to expand the bounds of writing beyond standard black, blue, red and green."



That's what's written on their internet site. My experience with their inks is ambigous: I like most colors, but the inks I've tried weren't best behaved (Orange Crush, Shoreline Gold caused nib crud; Hor Bubble Gum is PINK and it stains everything).



Ebony Purple is very well lubricated ink that flows super smooth. It's part of small ebony inks collection - so far I've tried two of them and they're both (Ebony Green + Ebony Purple) dark, heavily saturated, and with quite a lot of sheen. I've never seen something like this greenish sheen on purple ink - it's crazy :) Basically I rather enjoy this ink although loooong drying time may be an issue for some of you.

The green sheen on the Ebony purple blows me away - I've used this ink for several years and never seen that. Mind you, I use fine nibs. Thanks for the illumination!

The best green sheen I've experienced on purple ink is BungBox Sweet Potato Purple.

That green sheen is absolutely dazzling.. The mind boggles.

 

How is this ink as far as hygine?

 

Heavily saturated purples are a warning sign in my mind. The stains you'd have to burn the converter to get rid of them.

 

Diamine Majestic purple is along the same lines, and I cannot get the stains out for the life of me.

Diamine Grape also has a green sheen. However, it is a notorious stainer and clogged the nib of two of my pens within a day of normal use.

 

Paperdarts, you mention that you have used this ink for a while. Does it tend to dry quickly in the nib while you are writing, or is it practical for note taking?

This is one of my favorite inks and for some reason plays weakly well with my Lamy 2000 - so much so that it is all I use in the 2000.

I keep trying, but I cannot bring myself to like this ink. I've never been able to get much purple out of it, and certainly not the green shown above. It just seems like a dull, not-very-interesting black to me. I've tried it in both regular and italic nibs, too. I have an opened, almost full bottle of it that I would happily give away to someone who would love it. If anyone (in the US) is interested in it, send me a PM.

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier. I've tried it on all of the different papers that I use regularly, from cheap to medium expensive. I didn't bother testing it on my expensive paper, since by that time, I knew that it just wasn't for me. The ink is on its way to a new home, however, and I hope that the new owner will like it better.

Well - I just had a sample. It was in a pen for a week and didn't cause any trouble. On the other hand I heard that some people had issues with this ink (clogging, staining).

It reminds me of Sailor Shigure. Similar color, and same green sheen.

Well that changes everything for me.

 

If sailor has something that is similar to this I will almost always choose sailor over private reserve.

 

Just me being prejudiced there.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
