Dark Blue Inks On Semi-Glossy Paper (Sheen)

I love to try comparing different inks on different papers. I came across an old financial planner of my wife's that had some interesting paper. It is somewhat glossy, yet somewhat absorbent. It's feels like glossy paper, but when you write on it, the ink absorbs and dries fully with no smearing. I quickly found that this paper really brings out the sheen, even more than Tomoe or Rhodia. It also showcases shading, as well.

I don't have great lighting, so these were the best I could get, but I wanted to share:

So there you have it. I was surprised by Shin Kai. I know it sheens, but it had dramatically more sheen than even Yama Dori on this paper.

I also noticed that Pilot BL/BLK didn't sheen, and it normally does.

A nice comparison, thank you. Looking forward to my bottle of Salix even more now, but it's hard to imagine anything ever trumping tsuki-yo for me.

Nice Sheen

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The most sheen I have ever seen on a dark blue is the old Black Box Omas blue. Surprised at the Shin-Kai. Sadly I do not like Shin-kai or Tsuki-yo so my bottles sit unused. It can seen till the cows come home but if I don't like the color I wont use it.

Visconti Blue sheens for me a little as well. I was surprise that AsaGao will also sheen on certain papers (LIFE, Midori, TR) and has a little of that red edge on a wet pen. It seems a threshold thing since I never see it on CF papers.

I thought it was neat that Salix even sheens a bit on this paper.

That's too bad about Shin Kai. It's close to a perfect ink, for me. It's a blue black that isn't teal or too blue. It sheens without smudging at the hint of humidity (I'm looking at you, Majestic Blue and Yama Dori). It's well behaved and it doesn't feather.

The only downside? That price, tho.

Thanks for the comparison. I did not realize that Shin-kai had sheen. Hmmmm.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
