I must be missing something.

All I see are a few Esty desk pens, though one is a blue band-less that looks like it would restore nicely without much trouble. But I'm no expert.

3xxx starburst nibs are uber-rare and correspondingly expensive. One of these pens has a BROKEN ONE!

I can only hope someone with talent can revive this nib that it may live.

Yep, that's what I was missing, didn't see one had a sunburst nib. Now it all makes sense.

I'd argue there is something more unusual than the 3xxx nib in the group.

Okay, I'll play. Let's see if I can list some differences.

Two are marked R Esterbrook H c (though it could be a stylized '& Co')

Two are marked Esterbrook ®

One has a broken Sunburst nib

One has a gold plated nib

One has a 9450 nib

One has a missing feed

The gold plated nib has a different feed to the other two visible feeds

One is blue and the other four are black

The blue one seems to have a ring missing between the body and the tail - of course this could be just the design

One has a yellow acrylic tail

Now I don't know if that is exhaustive, or indeed what if anything is significant.

The yellow tailed pen is a fake Esterbrook?

Dunno.

I don't think the middle one is an Esterbrook at all. The description of the listing even states so. A better view of the nib would help.

As far as the damaged 3968 nib, I'll have to post pics of one I have. I thought it was toast, and certainly looks that way, but I tried it for grins, and it really writes nice. The one in this listing, however, is shot.

Despite what is wrong on this listing, it's still probably not outrageously high, even with the blue one appearing to have a slight curve.

Parts ... is Parts.

Yeah, that broken tine on the sunburst nib made me cry -- and I don't even go for 3xxx nibs. Well, as of 9:30 PM EDT tonight (August 9) someone may end up with a good deal on parts pens, because there might be something worth salvaging.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
