Hello From California

Hello from California!

I’m new to the world of fountain pens and only recently discovered the Fountain Pen Network. What a wonderful source of information from kind and knowledgeable people!

I wanted to be cautious about diving into fountain pens, so most of my instruments at this point are inexpensive (read: cheap) “workhorse” writers for comfortable note taking; the finer nib the better. I know the list isn’t much, but I hope to begin to gradually upgrade in quality soon.

My current pens are:

Lamy Safari and Al-Star
Pilot Metropolitan and Kakuno
Jinhao Pens (of various lines)
Noodler’s Ahab
Nemosine Fission and Singularity
TWSBI Classic

I’m an accountant by trade but since finding that fountain pens offer such a massive array of colors, I’ve recently been incorporating the various inks into my nerdy artwork.

So that’s me. Thanks for letting me join and be a part of the Fountain Pen Network and community. :)

Hello back to you from San Diego. I have a couple of old Sheaffer school school pens that were once used by an accountant. One was marked for black and the other red ink. Let's hope the red wasn't used too much. (My CPA and his couple of staff each use differently colored pencils; that way they can tell who worked on any file.)

Thank you all for the welcome!

AC12, I'm in Southern California, so the best I could hope for would be the LA Convention. I'm hopeful!

OCArt, I'm in Irvine so not too far off. We do different colored pencils so we know who has been in what files. I've not been able to convert anyone to fountain pens yet!

In the "old days" of pen and ink ledgers, the black ink was used for the debit half of the entry and red was used for the credit half of the entry. So both were used equally. Total debit MUST EQUAL total credit to make a balanced entry.

Welcome !

Actually, your selection of "workhorse" pens is quite intelligent. I have much the same variety, in contemporary pens. May I suggest, for your pleasure, a wider nib and a colorful ink that suits your pleasure. A broad line of a color you like is fun to use.

Write with joy.

The Nemosine Singularity is an oft-overlooked affordable pen. I have a couple--- one is a demonstrator--- and both have very nice nibs. The other pen that is under the radar is the Pelikan Pelikano. I took the Pelikano Jr and some cartridges on vacation for my travel journal. It's large diameter barrel and smooth nib made writing a pleasure.

Thank you! I've tried branching out but my handwriting is small and because of that I use a fine nib. Which really prevents me from a lot of the colors with sheen! I've tried flexible nibs in the Noodler's Ahab but ended up with a cap full of ink. Any suggestions on a good next step up from Lamy and Metropolitan would be appreciated!

I'd never heard of the Pelikano before, I do like the look of it. It reminds me of a Pilot Kakuno, relatively short but durable.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
