Burgoyne Or Chartres Blue Platinum 3776?

Recommended Posts

I alreaday have a black Platinum 3776 with a SF nib that I use regularly and really enjoy writing with. I want to get another but cannot decide between the Chartes Blue and the Burgoyne. Can anyone who has both colors, or seen both colors in person make a recommendation? Which color really stands out?

They are both very nice. Very deep rich colors. If I could only have one, I would be happy with either color, so I would say flip a coin and say whichever way it comes up that is what you are going to order. If after having the decision made for you, you regret flipping the coin, then you will truly know the answer.

I've got three 3776 Centurys so far: black, SF nib, Bourgogne F and Chartres F.

The two colored ones are about equally striking. If I were to ever sell one of them, the red would stay, but only because it was a birthday gift from my youngest daughter. But I have no intention of selling either one, in any case. (One is currently filled with Asa Gao, the other with Momiji.)

As MKB wrote, they both have deep and rich colors. Do you like blue or red (well, burgundy) better in general? That should tell you which one to get.

I have both and as others posters have mentioned both are beautiful and well saturated. If I could have only one, it would be the Bourgogne. The Chartres Blue almost looks black unless seen in bright light. On the other hand, the Bourgogne is very obviously burgundy in color. That being said, you really can't go wrong with either color.

I recently got the blue one and I wouldn't say it is easy to mistake it for black unless in low light conditions. It is a very dark blue but obviously blue.

Doesn't matter, you will end up with both at some point

My thought exactly. Go ahead and get both, save on shipping that way. :D

I would say blue stands out more than burgundy.

I have a Chartres blue with SF nib and it's gorgeous. On top of the fact that Chartres blue has a direct link with the blue colour used on the glass panels of the Chartres cathedral, it's really a unique and beautiful colour.

I have a Chartres Blue with F. Blue one shows more deeper color, I would say.
By the way, I found that every collector who purchased this model, they always purchase different color as well.

I currently own both. I think the Burgundy one is more striking at first glance. However, if you like to match your ink to your pen the Charters Blue is much easier to match. I have Iro Asa-gao in mine and Sailor Oku-yama in the Burgandy.

So I should buy both the Chartres and the Burgoyne, one in SF and one in Medium? I have too many black pens at the moment.

I noticed while browsing somewhere yesterday that there is also a Strawberries 'n' Cream 3776. For those so inclined, it would pair nicely with the Coconut Ice Pelikan discussed recently. Mr Rice, are you listening?

If you like them both equally and think there's a good chance you'll end up with both eventually, why not? It's only money. ;)

Strawberries 'n Cream? Do tell. Is that your name for it?

*whew* I was picturing a creamy pink. While pretty, I can live without this.

Oh okay. Thank goodness. I thought there was another 3776 that I was going to have to chase.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
