Best (Dry) Ink For Twsbi Classic?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I just purchased my first TWSBI, the Classic EF, My research told me the EF nib would lay a line just slightly more fine than a Lamy Al-Star, but it's more like a European medium and very wet. As I tend to write very small, I had hoped that perhaps a different ink might help compensate. De Atramentis Indigo is the only ink that seems to work well; other De Atramentis inks (Plum most notably) and a few Noodler's inks were a disaster. I didn't have this issue with either my Lamy or Pilot Metropolitan.

My paper quality varies, I prefer Rhodia but a lot of my notes are on cheap Staples notebooks so the bleeding and feathering make the writing almost illegible. I'm relatively new to fountain pens so I do apologize if I'm repeating a question or I'm unclear in my terms, but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time!

Pelikan Blue Black is great, if you can find it. In Germany it goes for under 5 Euros.

Unfortunately, the distributor doesn't offer it in the U.S. any more. That said, you may be able to find it from Amazon, from a non-U.S. source, which is what I did a few weeks ago. Rohrer und Klingner Salix or Scabiosa are a couple more dry inks that might work well in the Twsbi.

Meanwhile, some time back Twsbi produced a short video showing how to adjust the nib for wet/dry/line width, which is now on Youtube.

You might also look at KWZI iron gall or R&K inks. IGs tend to be drier inks although I find KWZI to be less dry than R&K. And KWZI makes some beautiful colors.

Thank you all for the tips! I watched the TWSBI video (also one from Goulet) but I can't et my nib free. If Brian Goulet can't remove the nib without damaging the feed, I'm wayyyyy to nervous to try. Great info tho!

I'll give the Pelikan and the R&K inks a try. I hope that will help. Thank you all!

Though I love & use (dry) IG inks regularly, I echo the previous few suggestions for Pelikan Blue/Black, a conventional dye-based, very dry & well behaved ink.

As said by others, sadly :(, Chartpack does not distribute this particular Pelikan ink in North America, but it's easily available from Cult Pens in the UK, (no affiliation) in both a 30 & a 60 ml bottle.

I have been getting my supply from the UK.

To Canada, at least, it's faster service than from any US dealer.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
