Hello ladies & Gents,

As you may have read in another thread, I have been recently disappointed with the new MB Royal Blue. It fades (at least with me) over time.

I had an old shape bottle that looked and behaved completely different. Stays rich with same color vibrancy as when wet. Guess missed formulation news when new shape bottles came around.

Unfortunately, where I live the above choices are what's available to me for the moment.

In your opinion, as scans can be deceiving on computer screens.. Which of the choices is the most thick/vibrant/saturated blue of the 3?

Thank you for your time.

I am not familiar with Asa Gao but can recommend MB Permanent Blue. According to the MB boutique near me, Permanent Blue is supposed to be the same colour as Royal Blue they definitely are not. Royal Blue is lighter and has a mauve tint and Permanent Blue is a darker and and more intense true blue. It's on my list as well.

Happiness is a real Montblanc...

Absorbent paper will also fade the ink as the ink (and dye) is absorbed into the paper.

I had that problem with Cross blue. It went on nice, but faded as it dried/absorbed into the paper.

Montblanc Permanent Blue. A pure blue, very vibrant and shades beautifully. Permanent as well.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated :) Seems it wasn't a very popular poll and expected won't get much votes so based on your comments I went ahead and bought MB Permanent Blue.

I really like it. It's neither lighter or darker than Royal blue to my eyes, just a different shade of blue. More refined blue, if I may.

I hope you enjoy the ink! I think you'll be pleased. Also I didn't like Royal Blue the first two times I tried it. It really works better for me in a WET writing pen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have and use all three of the inks. My vote for the Asa Gao is the most saturated and wet ink of the three. That being said, I still like and use the other inks. In fact the Royal Blue is a nice shading ink and not too dry or too wet. I have been disappointed in Montblanc's Permanent Blue ink, I get no shading, just a standard blue ink.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
