Snail Mail For Language Learners?

mr dodo

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was wondering if people currently learning or looking to practice a language that isn't their mother tongue would be interested in exchanging letters with people who want to practice that same language? Not only would it be a handy way to improve or maintain your language skills, but it's an excuse to whip out your favourite pens, papers and inks, knowing that the recipient will appreciate them.

If you're interested in this, please reply to this thread with:

-the languages that you want to practice, and a rough idea of your level (total novice, the level of a lower school student, the level of a high school student, near-fluent, fluent etc)

-a little bit about yourself and your interests (so people can find compatible pen-pals)

...

I'll start:

I'm currently a student of mathematical physics in Nottingham (UK) and my hobbies include cooking, music, sports/fitness and comedy.

I'm looking to exchange letters in French (probably the level of a not-very-good high-school student), Spanish (the level of a lower school student) and German (total novice).

...

I can't wait to write to some of you, if there's any interest in this.

Cheers

I hope you find someone to participate. It's a great idea. Unfortunately I don't have the language skills to do this. I took 2 classes of German to get my Bachelor of Arts language requirement, but that was 2 decades ago.

I feel pretty resigned to this thread being dead, but fortunately I've since found other sites where similar opportunities exist - if anyone happens upon this thread and wants to find such sites, a few are:

I do not recommend interpals. I joined 7 years ago, and had nothing but porn and unreliable correspondence from there.

Thank you for the tip - I haven't tried that one - just came across it in my search.

I'm definitely interested in penpals to work on French and Japanese. So... there.

I've used interpals and had decent luck finding nice penpals. However, I had to put restrictions in place so that I was only contacted by women (you can do this in your profile), otherwise I would just get inappropriate comments from men. There is a place where you can specifically ask for a language exchange, I have not tried that part, however.

Another place you might try is postcrossing.com. It's primarily a postcard exchange site, but there is a forum and there's a penpal thread where you can make a post requesting a French-speaking penpal.

That is even with restrictions. I wrote back to everyone who wrote to me, but no correspondence lasted more than 5 letters. I have found some other sites more reliable for correspondence. Postcrossing isn't bad, but a high percentage of correspondence from there has stopped (not by me).

It did take a lot of tries to find good penpals (that is, there were a lot of people with whom I exchanged only a few letters). I don't know if it would be any different if you were specifically writing for a language exchange. Maybe the desire to learn the language would be extra incentive to write?

Hi everyone,

I'm italian , I speak italian and portuguese, I'm now learning english and russian. I would like to exchange letters with people from Russia and from english speaking countries interested in italian or portuguese but only men, because my wife doesn't let me exchange letters with women. ( ). I am not gay, I am not interested in a gay relationship, i am heterosexual and I like women, I only have got a jealous wife, that's all.

It is difficult to find snail mail pen pals who are also interested in language exchange.

I do think this would be a useful thread to keep up, though. It's a unique enough need.

True. It's worth mentioning that since I wrote this thread off as dead, someone messaged me about multilingual letter exchange, so I take it all back - it's well worth posting in here if you want to give it a try.

Hi mr dodo,

nice idea, and I would love to participate. Is it still a option? I could only offer German in exchange for English.

With any luck, people interested in exchanging letters to learn languages will see your post in this thread and message you.

Those sites are worth checking out too - I'm sure you'll find someone with the same combination of languages as you.

I am ready to join (I always look for a good reason to use up my pen some more...). I am a French native speaker, and have some remaining German although with "schreckliche Grammatik"...

I studied as a chemical engineer and enjoy knitting, running, and spending most of my free time with my daughter (as if I had a choice, she is a preschooler whose main hobby is "Mommy").

I'd like to give it a try if anyone's language needs match mine.

  • English: native speaker
  • Swedish: fluent
  • Japanese: intermediate/advanced with terrible handwriting
  • (Modern) Greek: basic

I would love to participate in some language-learning mail, though I don't have a lot to offer.

-Native English speaker

-Probably an elementary level in German (higher in understanding than production)

-Basic, tourist-level Turkish

Other than the above, I'd also be interested in learning some Icelandic, Swedish, or Welsh if anybody's interested in dealing with a complete newbie to the language. :D

I'm happy to correspond with you in Swedish as long as you don't mind that I'm not a native speaker. Fluent, just not native.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
