Sheaffer Imperials - The First Ones - Some Pics And Request For Info

Fellow Collectors,

I've long been curious about a particular Sheaffer pen that looks like a cross between a Sheaffer TM Touchdown and a 500/875 cartridge pen c1958-1962.

The pens literally look like Sheaffer went into the model shop and grafted the cartridge pen's front section, short Triumph nib and all and mated it to the back end of a TM Touchdown. Not only that, but there are TWO versions of these pens: one with a plastic screw on cap and one with a metal slip on cap.

What's even more interesting is that there is very little in the way of primary information on these pens. The widely circulated 1962 Sheaffer's Service Manual copy I have is missing a key page - B24-B, which describes the pen with a screw on cap as Imperial AS9. This is also shown on undated catalog sheet showing the pen and that it came in black, burgundy, blue and sage green.

So what is this other pen that comes with either a gold plated or stainless steel slip on cap? I managed to acquire a mint version of the gold cap pen and it's screened on the barrel "GOLD" over "IMPERIAL." I've since heard the pen called "Golden Imperial" by collectors. I haven't yet seen the stainless cap pen or any primary references, and would love to see both. If you have them, please drop me an email.
I'm working on a profile of these two pens and would love to have the right data.
I’d like to thank Andy Evans of Andy’s Pens for loaning me the burgundy Imperial. http://www.andys-pens.co.uk
And a thank you to Ernst Bitterman and Gary/gee09 for scans of catalog and service manual info.
Thanks!

I have the burgundy with plastic screw on cap. I just called it a S. Touchdown but now I have, at last, a name for it. Thank you.

Sorry I can't help with the slip cap version.

Hi, Effin1,

There are two slip cap pens. The one with the gold cap, similar to a Crest is call the "Gold" or "Golden Imperial". The one with the stainless cap similar to a Sentinel is the one I don't have a name for.

Thanks!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
