Pen And Ink Stand

Here's my latest little project, just a real quick one done last night at the request of my local stationary store owner. These will be for her calligraphy class, for the students to use. This particular version is a prototype, although it's completely finished. Upon testing this one out, she requested that I make it a couple inches wider to provide a more solid support for the pen, so I'll be making another one tonight that is a tad longer.

Wood here is cherry, with an outdoor semi-gloss polyurethane finish. I think I'll be making a couple more, for Herbin and Noodler's bottles probably. And I think the next version will have a couple small holes between the bottle and the pen rest to stand up a converter or cartridge for easier syringe filling.

Thanks! I'll have a couple photos of the new version (longer, and this one is maple because it was the next drop end I grabbed) this afternoon when the finish completes drying. :)

And here's the finished new one! The two on the back of the truck more accurately depict the finished colour, the fluorescent lights in my shop kind of sap the vibrancy of the wood.

Beautiful in its simplicity. I love the clean design, how it stabilizes the ink bottle - and the polyurethane will be impervious to ink spills, won't it?

Suggestion: If you do the version that you mentioned above where you bore holes for cartridge or converter, go all the way through. Otherwise they'll collect dust and debris and will be difficult to clean out.

I wouldn't want to try it for long-term resistance, but a spill should be easy to wipe away with no damage. I went with an outdoor-grade polyurethane for that purpose, actually. I've also sanded and multiple-coated both of these sufficiently that the surface is extremely smooth, which should also help quite a bit to keep it clean.

That's a very good point, I'll give that a shot. I wouldn't think it should be *too* difficult to clean out, given that you can flip it over and give it a tap on the desktop to bring stuff back out, but why have the problem at all if I can avoid it?

Wow, that is some nice work!

I use an old piece of two by four and drill holes to match the diameters of the pen barrels as close as possible. I use spade bits and set the drill press so I get a small exit hole so one can use a paper clip to clean out the holes. I use mostly Platinum Preppies and Noodler's Ahabs that have been converted to eyedropper configuration.

Keep up the good work!

If you want those to look *really* nice, take a pilot drill pass with a 3/32nd, then come back with a Forstner of the desired size and let the pilot follow the first hole. Makes for a really nice-looking, flat-bottom pocket. :)

And thank you!

I really like this design with room for 2 Herbin 1667 bottles. Can you make me one please?

Sure, I can do that. I'm actually working on a Herbin stand right now for another member! :)

This is still in construction and unfinished, but it gets the idea across. I can easily use the pocket dimensions here and adjust the design to match the all-one-piece layout. Would you like it in maple, like the pictures you've quoted there? :)

Thanks! I rather like how that one came out myself. :) It was just supposed to be just a prototype for a version with four pockets and a single pen, to display all the special-edition Herbin inks... but I'm liking that single-pocket design enough that I might just decide to make some of these too. :) The pocket on this one was the experimental bit, the square corners on the Herbin bottle presented me some challenges to machine properly.

Here's how the full-up four-pocket version came out! Unfortunately, I only have one ink bottle of the right shape for this, so I can't show it off fully loaded. But I like how it came out here anyway. :)

  • 2 years later...

I've just got into woodworking and this is my first project, a sort of test run as it were. I love the old English ink stands but I wanted something specifically for fountain pens.

VERY NICE

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
