Hello From The State Of Tennessee.

I have made one post before in the forums but thought I would pop in here and say "hi". I am a historical reenactor so therefore I am interested in doing things "old school" I shave with a double edge razor, write with a fountain pen etc. I joined because I don't know of any "local" fountain pen folks so i was looking for a place I could get help when I need it and generally discuss all the goodness that is pen and ink :)

War reenactment, or something altogether different?

Welcome!

I have done everything from Roman Legion to modern training with the US army. I "specialize" early Tennessee Colonial, World War 2 (US and Tennessee National Guard) and Vietnam (US) with a little Civil war thrown in.

I have been using a Lamy Safari for the past few years but have recently gotten a Sheaffer 440 and, as it breaks in, it is getting better and better. If the "import image" tab was being a little more accommodating I would post a picture.

Hello m2Squad120th,

Wow you have a long name lol.

Reading through your introduction and looking at your profile picture reminded me of a friend of mine. He was living down the road at the time, about 2 months ago, and he told me he had 'gear.' Long story short, we took my truck out to a creek bed (dry of course being SoCal) and did a quick photo shoot for him all decked out in Army gear, most of it from a relative and most of it from the Vietnam era. I got to have one of my dogs participate, and he did quite well looking off in the distance very serious, his attention on something out there lol.

If you ever have an interest in having an accurate period photo turned into a painting let me know and we can discuss it. I would find the challenge fun. Dan

Welcome from the west end of the state!

Hi! I've been through there several times. Good to see a fellow Tennessean here!

I use the same name on every forum whether its pens, razors, or reenacting. It stems from the world war 2 unit I reenact. I actually have a good friend who is into vintage large format cameras and my wife is really into vintage 35s (and easing into 110). I have never even thought of a painting made from a photo. Neat!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
