Montblanc special edition inks are always a lovely thing to have! Occasionally, Montblanc comes out with a time-limited ink to commemorate "something," whether it is a person, event, or thing. Their Twilight Blue ink was released in tandem with their Meisterstück Blue Hour pens.

This ink comes in the regular Montblanc special edition 30mL bottle with a metal cap. The lip is quite wide and can accommodate even my thickest pen with ease.

Blue-black is normally not my favorite color, but after using this ink, I've grown to like it. Unlike most blue-blacks that tend to lean towards a gray color, this one has heavy presence of green undertones. However, it does not actually count as a teal or a blue-green yet.

This review was done completely with a Pilot Parallel 1.5mm on HP 32lb Premium Choice Laser Paper.

This ink behaves very well even with a dripping 1.5mm pen. There is very little feathering and barely any show-through. There is no bleed, even on spots where the paper is pushed to the extreme. The color has a medium amount of saturation and is a tiny bit dry.

What's really impressive is the amount of shading from this ink! It shades from a very light blue-black to a much darker and saturated shade. There is also quite a good amount of red-orange sheen that is quite hard to capture.

The chromatography of this ink shows a major blue portion (duh!) with large light-green part was well. There are hints of a bright sky-blue along the fringes too.

This ink isn't exactly the most water resistant, but it isn't too shabby either. The water test was performed by placing drops of water on the grid for 20 seconds then wiped away with a tissue.

After twenty seconds, the grid lines still has a very faint shadow of the ink and is barely visible. Thankfully, there is not too much wet smear when wiping.

This ink is a little on the pricy side but is cheaper than the other MB special edition inks. This can be found of $16 for a 30mL bottle, from your local Montblanc boutique and other Montblanc exclusive retailers.

Pros

  • Beautiful shading

  • Plenty of red sheen

  • Great behavior

Cons

  • A little pricy ($16 for 30mL)

  • Special edition (You will have to hoard it up!)

  • Not the most water resistant

Thank you for the review musicman. My opinion on this ink is diametrally different than yours, though :) I find it's not well behaved (especially in dryish pens and nibs, has zero waterproofness and tends to fade under the sunlight). I can't find anything for me in it.

Interesting! On drier nibs, I may seem quite like, so I think that may be a problem. I haven't had a chance to test fading yet though, so I'll take your word for it! :) I guess this won't be one of my journaling inks.

What a pity that it fades. I've discovered that MB's Royal Blue also fades to a rather unpleasant blue-grey even when it's not in sunlight.

Thank you for the review, this has convinced me that this is pretty close to KWZI IG Turquoise, but without the awesome color change. Like the JFK, I think I will pass.

Thank you for a great review. I found the ink to be less teal than in your examples, might be due to pen (Lamy Vista 1.9 mm) and paper (Tomoe River). I especially like the red sheen. Just have this ink for a couple of days, so I don't yet know how it will fade over time.

Thanks for the detailed review. I have been using Twilight Blue in a MB 144 F and find it very well behaved. Flows very well, as most MB inks I have used do. It really does change colour over time. The other day I went to add an item to a shopping list I had written with It a day or so before. I added the item and the colour was completely different from the rest of the list. The new writing was deep blue and the old writing had turned teal to the point of being called green.

At first I thought I had made a mistake and filled the pen with another ink but nope, it was the same pen, same ink. I am guessing that MB built in the changeability intentionally to evoke the changing light during the twilight hour. Romantic fantasy? Perhaps, but it's a nice image! :)

I just bought a jar of this ink... I was hoping it was another Diamond Blue but it's not. Side by side The Twilight is a but darker, greener, but you can see a bit of a relation on the Twilights lighter lines.

Not a bad blue, Diamond Blue is still my favorite blue, by any manufacture.

I also prefer Diamond Blue and would like to see it added to the permanent collection.

I'm going to admit that I have not heard of "Diamond Blue" before!

Thank you for this detailed review. I may have to snag a bottle of this now.

You better hurry! It may not be around for much longer!

If you look through MB's Ink reviews or type MB Diamond Blue ink you'll see the color and bottle. It's a amazing Blue and an instant favorite... I own 3 bottles and horde them.

Thanks for the review - the fading point is interesting. I have just purchased this pen myself on my first visit to a Real Life Pen Shop in Adelaide, though I forgot to bring my syringe & DU needle with me and so cannot refill my empty Kaweco cartridge. Sad face. I am pleasantly surprised by the teal tones in this ink, I'd expected it to be, well, twilight in colour, kind of a dusky grey-blue-black. Either way it's still pretty and the dryness could be handy for this Moleskine diary I am dedicated to seeing out until 2016..

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
