Chinese Pens And Their "inspirations"

Recommended Posts

My interest in Chinese fountain pens spiked today when I realized that the Jinhao 159 is similar in appearance to the Montblanc 149. In the next 6 hours, I spent $25 on 9 other models of Baoer, Jinhao, Hero, and Duke pens on eBay.

Is there a running list anywhere of what pens correspond with Chinese pens that are clearly derived from classic fountain pens? If not, post pairings that you know of and I'll make a list. The only purpose it serves is novelty. Thought it'd be interesting.

A sincere man am I
From the land where palm trees grow,
And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

All those moments will be lost in time.
Like tears in rain.
Time to die.

Thanks, everybody! Keep them coming! I'm compiling a spreadsheet of these pens and their counterparts. I'll post it once the list is bigger.

Hero 800 -> Parker 45. Just got one of each from Todd N ... they didn't even try to make it different. (OK I take it back. The arrow clip doesn't have the feather pattern, only the outline)

Jinhao 15 with Waterman Serenite.

I just had a look at this pen, and its an odd looking fellow right enough, but I think it's a fair bit away from being a Serenite "lookalikey". Hahaha.

This thread, while featuring many lookalikes, is not about lookalikes, but design inspirations. Having just looked up some pictures of the Serenite, it is obvious that the Jinhao 15 is inspired by it. I still think the 15, which is one of my favorites (I own 3), is an awesome design, though.

If anyone has a spare Hero 812 in white that they're willing to part with, please PM me. I'm trying to find one for my collection.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
