Nothing like a personal attack to make my day.

It is reassuring to know you are still there. Actually I have come to agree with you on this issue. Somebody needs to poke fun at all the plum 51 alerts.

I have a plum, so they can't be rare.

Exactly what part of the Smiley face did you not understand Rod?

Never fear, I promise to Never use your name in Any post again.

Let us know what does the set turns out.

The set arrived today. It is a demi set, not a full size. The ad didn't specify that it was a demi set, but it did have the measurements so I probably should have knows. Regardless, it is in very good shape. I took some photos, but at the moment I only have an iPhone. I ordered a new camera yesterday, so I may try taking some more when it gets here. It is very hard to capture the color.

Here is the set with a burgundy pen for comparison:

And a few of just the pen:

I am not an expert on whether or not the color is rare. I was at a store one time that sold modern and vintage pens. When I asked if they had a Plum Parker 51 the owner rolled her eyes at me and informed me that even the most devoted collectors rarely are able to find a Plum 51. I didn't have the heart to tell her I already had two at the time. I think they are there if you look for them. There are always some popping up on ebay and they are at pen shows. Here is my current collection of Plum 51s (don't hate me):

Picture four, the pen looks burgundy.

I have one plum set. I was not sufficiently impressed by the color to seek any more samples, even if the price were a big bargain. It's a nice set, and I looked for many years for a plum pen, because I thought I would like the color. It is nice, but the dark Parker 51 colors just don't pop out at you. Good luck with your plum collection. If you continue with this you might identify some variations on the theme, adding to the body of Parker 51 knowledge. Nobody should hate you because of having a few plum pens. Every collection needs some standouts.

I would never ever run after a plum 51. It may , however , come my way by pure chance. I have all the other beautiful color 51s. The forest green , the teal blue , the midnight blue , the burgundy , the bloody Brit red , the navey grey , the dove grey and the black. Both with gold and lustraloy caps. And , I am content with what I have.

Here is the pen next to a burgundy. It is really hard to get the color right, especially on my iPhone. It can also be hard to tell the burgundy apart from the plum without having them next to each other. When my new camera arrives I am going to try to catalog my Parker 51 pens.

Clearly plum in my eyes!

Still looks clearly red in your picture. The following shows English burgundy, plum and burgundy in the tenth to fourteenth pens from left to right in the picture.

When put next to a known Burgundy, it's easy to spot which one is which. Ditto when compared to Black. I think it's ironic that I have a Plummer but *not* a Midnight Blue (which IIRC is a "common" color...). And that I paid less than what I've seen the Midnight Blues going for recently.

Pajaro, thanks for the photo showing the differences between Plum, Burgundy and British Bloody Burgundy (gotta maybe get myself one of those BBBs someday... B)).

Hey, just for curiosity's sake, what are the yellow pens in the photo?

The yellow pens at the top with steel caps are Kullock conversions, a fountain pen and a ballpoint.

The yellow pen with the yellow cap was a Kullock conversion barrel, cap and hood for a 51. Regretably, it was broken by accident and is no more. The nib and guts are now in another Kullock conversion.

Ahh ! plum being the color that can't show itself easily? What is then the use of having such a color? No offence intended ,though , to the plum 51 lovers. Just a thought to share.

That may be why it wasn't popular at the time.... But it's true -- I had to take mine outside in bright sunlight to compare it to the black 51 Vac and the Burgundy 51 Special, and also (more recently) to compare it to the late Mark II burgundy Aero I picked up about a year ago.

So, why did *I* want one? Because it was purple. If it had been a "common" color like Black or Teal I would still have wanted one. Because it was purple. OTOH, Mustard, Buckskin Beige, Nassau Green and Cocoa are colors that do absolutely nothing for me. Don't care how "rare" they are. Don't want one in any of those colors.... Forest Green and Navy Grey are okay, but neither one makes me jump up and down.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
