What Is Your Favorite/best Blue-Black And/or Navy Inks?

Always looking for suggestions. I've tried several - Noodler's, Diamine - and still looking for the "perfect" ink.

(Seemingly, an eternal quest.)

What say you, fellow fountainpenners? What's your favorite blue-black and/or navy fountain pens inks and why?

I have been on a similar quest.

From what I have read the Sailor and Pilot blue blacks seem to be very well thought of.

Consider Sheaffer Blue Black.

In my personal opinion, I like my 4001 Blue Black and Noodler's 54th Massachusetts. I find that Pilot Blue Black, although good, seems more like a blue than a blue-black.

If I'm going dark blue/navy, I like Diamine Majestic Blue and Levenger Empyrean.

In my opinion, the best blue-black ink is the discontinued Montblanc Midnight-Blue. However, this answer is not helpful to the OP. The truth is I haven't found a suitable replacement. I have found an ink that's very, very good, though it's not the classic blue-black color. This ink is KWZI blue-black archival ink. It's more of a dark blue and it's beautiful (it's an iron-gall ink).

I think you'd enjoy Pilot Shin-kai, Pelikan Tanzanite, Akkerman Diep-Duinwaterblauw (now also available in the US).

Finally, the iron-gall inks are also wonderful, and I recommend you give them a try. Here is an FPN thread comparing them.

Have you tried Sailor Sei Boku? I just got a fresh bottle in and it seems to be quite exceptional so far.

Whilst the ink I use every day and have relied most upon is Montblanc's Mystery Black, for blue-blacks my favourite ink is Pelikan's 4001 blue-black, followed by Waterman's blue-noir. Looking forward to recommendations for non-permanent navy ink.

I like Montblanc JFK (now becoming hard to find), Diamine Regency Blue, Louis Vuitton Bleu Sibyllin, Iroshizuku Shin-kai, the KWZI Iron Gall Blues, Sailor Kobe #51 Midnight.

It will always be Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black. End of story.

My favorite is Noodler's 54th Massachusetts and Rohrer & Klinger Verdigris.

Two GREAT choices.

I also suggest Diamine Denim and Noodler's Blue-Black.

Montblanc JFK (a standard charcoal-sque blue-black that as a little navy blue in it, subtle. Pretty. & the wet side for MB, to my eyes neither a typical blue-black or a real navy but sort of a mix both)

Diamine Midnight (very dark navy blue)

On a Budget: Skrip BB isn't bad at all. Pilot is also pretty good (used that for years).

Looking for a cap for a Sheaffer Touchdown Sentinel Deluxe Fat version

Yep. Gotta agree with this one. Second place would probably be Diamine Blue Black. But Pelikan is more interesting.

Just when you have found your favorite blue-black ink, you will begin to wonder if perhaps a beautiful navy would be more satisfying. Then the search begins anew. Yes, this navy is the color...but perhaps a dark teal would be more expressive. And then.........

Kobe #51 for me too. It's a great new ink (dark, mysterious & intriguing) & I'm using it every day. I like BungBox 4B too. I'm on my 2nd bottle.

Lately, I've been using Sailor Blue-Black for my work pens. It is quite dark, but there is definitely some blue there. I also like the Sailor Bung Box Blue-Blacks, Seiya Silent Night and 4B. I like the older iron gall-containing inks from Pelikan, Montblanc and Lamy. I also Mont Blanc JFK.

I like Diamine Midnight blue.

It is a DARK blue, without the greyish color of some blue-black inks, when I want a blue that is a lot darker than the standard blue inks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
