Great method, Fromthecrowd.

I like that pocket scale, very handy.

Lots of models on eBay. Just search for 'pocket scale'. They go for around $7. Very convenient for an eyedropper pen user! Mine even came in a leatherette case.

Have you had any issues with the flow in the Trivenis? I have two ebonite ones and neither flow well.

Sorry for the late reply - I started to type something up earlier, then lost it...

I had no problems at all with the original Trivenis - which used a tried-and-true Serwex MB (plastic) grip. They wrote smoothly from the start. I had a bit of difficulty at first with both my Junior Trivenis (acrylic and ebonite), which came with the new design (matching grip section) - but in both cases it resolved OK. The acrylic pen I found tended to railroad whenever I tried to flex the nib - but that turned out to be a function of the ink, rather than the pen, and was resolved easily enough by swapping to a different ink. The red ebonite I think (this was nearly a year ago!) had the nib and feed wedged in such a way that the tines were being forced to far apart - which messed up the capillary action of the pen (and made the writing experience scratchy). After a lot of fiddling, I managed to get it working too, and now it lays down a smooth fine-ish line (with a flex nib).

That's the long answer. Short answer: I had some issues with my 'Junior' Trivenis, but they write fine now they've been adjusted properly.

The ASA Viraat functional lines look quite good to me and reminds me of my daily writer the Gama Supreme. What is the grip section length of the Viraat? If it is less than 27 mm my fingers would grip the pen on the threads like on my Gama Supreme.

ASA Athlete

I like that wooden block holder. Where did you get it? (Apologies if this has been asked already!).

It is a bathroom accessory. I came across it somewhere on FPN. You can find it on eBay. Just search for Natural Wood Soap Dish.

Here is an empty ASA Athlete on a pocket scale. One may weigh it once in three days. When the figures approach 20.5 g it's time to fill it up.

I have a pocket scale like that, very handy.

This is my Pratap Senior, a $15 fleabay buy of perhaps a year ago or so. The pen is roughly the size of a Parker 51 but a bit shorter capped. Not the smoothest writer but I still like it.

I've got assorted other ebonite pens, including:

Esterbrook Dollar pen

Ratnamson Supreme

Gama Supreme

Varuna Rajan

Varuna Gajendra (a ridiculously large pen)

Curious about the nib, where was it made in India? Where can one buy it from?

Thanks, Seele. Don't fret; I miss out on just as many, if not more. I got lucky with this one.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
