Ackerman inks are highly recommend by several fountain pen bloggers. Are they that good?

The inks are excellent IMO and the bottles are even better.

It's Akkerman, btw. :)

Thanks very much. Any suggestions as to where I can find them?

You can buy them directly from Akkerman or from Vaness Pens in Arkansas.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I buy mine from the Vanness store in Little Rock, Arkansas. Their website is https://www.vanness1938.com/ and you can order online, via email or over the phone. Vanness is my favorite source for inks, paper, and all other fountain pen goodies!

As it was explained to me at the 2014 DC Super Pen Show, Akkerman is the European Iroshizuku line of inks. I think that's a very fair comparison: outstanding bottle design, great flow through every nib, nice selection of colors, good performance on low quality paper, easy maintenance, and high prices when bought in the US.

It's a good line of inks.

The way I see it, they are "improved" and/or "remade" Diamines. E.g. A's #10 (an IG) is very similar to Dss Registrar's. Similar colour and colour change on drying but A's has a better flow (Registrar's is IMO too dry). These two inks (A's and D's) even show very similar chromatograms and any tensides/surfactants which they may have added can't be seen there (e.g. on blotting) paper anyhow.

Their No 10 is probably my favourite all round ink.

Something very solid and satisfying about using it. The colour change is subtle as is it's shading. It looks classic and timeless and smells just like an ink should - don't taste it though, soooo bitter.

Like lapis has said, I too think they are modified Diamines and do somehow perform "better"

Look up some reviews here and order away, I'm sure you'll not be disappointed.

I checked the Vanness web site and all Akkerman inks were listed as "out of stock". I'm watching a 60ml bottle of blue #8 on eBay. It is listed for $35.95 + $6.15 shipping. Is this a good deal?

You might email or call Vanness. Seems like there have been some issues selling Akkerman online in the past.

If I recall correctly, Vanness sells the 60ml bottle of Akkerman inks for $29. with free shipping for 3 or more. I would email Mike at vanness1938@sbcglobal.net and ask him what he has in stock.

Edited to correct spelling and grammar...Arghhhhh

I just received an email from Lisa at Vanness Pens...they have all the Akkerman inks in stock except #8 Shocking Blue. I'm sure their price is significantly better than the EBay seller you mentioned.

As far as Shocking Blue, I'm sure they'll get it back in stock soon.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
