Eversharp Square 4 Pencil

Hi!

I found this in an antique shop yesterday and HAD to have it.

From what I've found out, it's a Square 4 because of the square (?) lead it holds.

I asked the shop owner if she had any pens or pencils (she did), and spotted this one in her pen cup by the register.

I asked if she would sell it to me. She looked at me funny and said that she uses it , but would let me have it for 4 bucks. It's mine now ;)

I LOVE the art deco design, the size of it (6", I have big hands), and the fact that it has a couple of replacement leads stored inside.

I assume that it's from the 30s.

Doug

Congratulations! Nice find, and a great price.

Can you snap a close-up of the business end of the pencil? The ferrule doesn't appear to be completely attached to the barrel from what I can see from what I can see.

Sure can!

Everything works as it should, I couldn't find any flaws other than the clip needing polishing.

Looks good! In the first photo I thought there might be a gap between the knurled portion and the barrel, but I was wrong (again!). I've had a few that had that problem.

As for lead, there is usually some listed on ebay if you should need to refuel.

best,

daniel

Hi Doug-thank you for posting this!! My bf dragged me to an antique store today. Besides a newer Esterbrook, I bought a Parker pencil, Wearever pencil, and this exact pencil (also for $4-crazy huh??)!!

I was trying to figure out where to even look to find out information about it!

While I don't want to start buying pencils, I bought it because it looked so unusual and interesting.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
