J. Herbin is known to be the oldest name in ink production in the world, and their inks 'l'Encre de la Tete Noire", "Perle des Encres," (The Jewel of Inks) and "l'Encre des Vaisseaux" (The Ink of Ships) were produced as early as 1700.



M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.



J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.



By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).



J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.



At the moment company belongs to Exaclair Inc, that has rights to brands like Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Brause or G. Lalo.

It will be one of my shortest reviews. Gris Nuage is one of the worst inks I've ever tries. It simply wasn't made for writing.

Looks more like an ink for mixing. Take a bright color and make it dusky and pale. Hmmm. Thanks for the sufficient review. Brief as it was, it told me everything I needed to know.

Thanks Visvamitra, not even you could persuade me to re visit this one. I couldn't find a pen that laid down a dark enough line with it for writing.

I don't even use it for mixing anymore. I use it in a water brush to add shade on a sketch.

I actually love this color for flex pens. I like the shading you see in the writing.

BTW, it looks great in that sketch.

That is just too pale for daily writing. It looks like it's been lying in the sun and has bleached

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
