Should A Non-Millionaire Buy A Visconti Millionaire?

I am negotiating to buy a Visconti Millionaire Marble Forest Brown fountain pen. I'm totally besotted with it. The pattern in the marble is so beautifully graphic and evocative. I already own two less expensive Visconti pens and am very happy with them. If I go for it I'll still be able to buy groceries and pay the utility bills but because of my upbringing spending so much money on a "frivolity" triggers lots of guilt. I'm looking for some consensual validation here.

Listen to the guilt. It will ruin your pleasure in the pen. I've found my happy price point even though, like you, I saved for a more expensive pen (a Nakaya in my case). I just couldn't bring myself to spend that amount of cash on the pen. Truthfully, it's a pretty pen, but I've gotten plenty of enjoyment from the Nakaya cash that included several pens, bottles of ink, and improved ability to save money and enjoy what I have.

After that saving period, my buying has drastically slowed down.

Personally I would pay the rent and buy food for the next instead of spending it on a pen... I always try to live within my means. Sounds like a nice pen though :)

However you decide, it is worth mentioning that your title to this thread is very funny and a fitting expression for many of us here on what Wim calls our fountain pen "nuthouse" on the prairie.

Probably not. Oh what am I saying, if it's within your means life is short.

I am "far" from being a millionaire. I have the Marble Green in "F", and pictures don't do these pens any justice. I plan on purchasing the Brown also this week, as it is the one I really wanted. I would be afraid of staining the white section (why I went with the green). Another thing to look at is: you are really getting 2 pens with the RB section with it. Also, the "F" is more so on this pen than my other Visconti's.

Seems underpriced for the name.

Agreed. Although Thousandaire probably lost it's cachet a loooooong time ago. ;)

Thanks everyone. I think I will not buy, for now at least.

Obviously, you are not comfortable with it. Why not put it on your "gifts I would like to get" list ?

Friends and family tire of getting you ties and belts and socks. Some might be grateful for ideas.

Thank you all. I told the seller today that I would pass on buying this beautiful Visconti and he offer me another $100.00 off

his price. What is one to do? Of course I accepted. I will post pictures once this lovely pen arrives.

I am very happy you will be getting the pen you want! I think the fact that you gave it a "good think" & still decided to purchase should "put an end" to any concern about spending the money. I have purchased MANY things that would have seemed extravagant to many BUT they have rewarded me with joy & satisfaction far outlasting their purchase price. I will never be wealthy by the world's standards but to enjoy things that you have chosen to share your life is for many persons something that is unmeasurable. Many of my friends who "collect" things recount "robbing the grocery budget" & while eating peanut butter for the next two weeks until a paycheck arrives being quite happy with their "choice." I am sure you will derive much enjoyment from your pen & it's use. Congratulations!

Haha, whoever named this series either did it with a lot of irony or just made a poor choice. I have the Millionaire Honey :gaah:. Like a name of taken from a James Bond movie/ novel.
Thank goodness the name is quite discreet because the pen is otherwise quite flawless. I especially love the "piston" mechanism and of course the stub nib is wet, writes beautifully and a bit flexy. I also love the fact the feed is the same cream color with the body, and it matches the gold trim and pale marble so well.

The Visconti Millionaire arrived today. It is quite the pen. I'll photograph it tomorrow and post some pictures.

To Grigo, yes my name is rather ridiculous for an elderly adult; blame my doting father who thought his baby girl was just so itsy-cutesy and blame me for being too lazy to ever change it. At least he didn't name me Octopussy.

Please put up these pictures that you promised weeks ago!

I'm not the original owner, but here are some pictures of my Green Visconti Millionaire. Somewhere in the resizing, they really lost their sharpness and do not do the pen justice, but since so many people were asking for photos, I thought I would share what I have.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
