Conway Stewart R&r Recommendation

Hi there. I've come into owning a lovely Conway Stewart No. 475 in blue marble that needs some TLC. The lever barely opens and I have no idea what kind of condition the bladder is in. This is my first vintage pen, so it's not something I'm willing to attempt myself. Can anyone recommend someone in the USA I can send the pen to for repair and restoration? Thanks so much!

475s have a friction-fit section, a floating pressure-bar and take a #17 or 18 sac (I tend to use the smaller size). They are therefore very straightforward to repair. The only problem is in the fragility of the Conway Stewart lever, I have taken to applying a small amount of graphite to the pressure bar to make the mechanism work more smoothly. This can be done through the lever slot so you don't need to remove the bar if it is not otherwise necessary. .

I have had three of these pens in the last couple of years but I gave the first two away to friends because they so admired their writing qualities, preferring them to much more expensive vintage pens. The point I'm making is that the 475, despite its plain appearance with no cap bands, is a very handsome and functional pen and I hope you enjoy using it after you have had it repaired.

The only US repairer I have ever used is Danny Fudge and I would recommend him for good work, reasonable prices and quick turnaround.

johnmc2, thank you very much for the recommendation. I sent it off to Danny and he turned it around in about a week -- wonderful work and fast service at a very reasonable cost.

What a great little pen this CS 475 is! It has what appears to be a M nib that's a little soft, with stubbish qualities. Very pleasant to use!

It's great to know if I stumble upon another vintage pen that piques my interest there's a pen expert I can send it to for fast, affordable service.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
