Sreekumar's Vaib Pen

This was one of my first purchases from Dr. Sreekumar, a nibmeister par excellence. The design and the genesis of this pen is interesting. S-K was canvassing for ideas to make a black ebonite pen and fellow FPNers were pitching in. The final design was based on Vaibhav Mehandiratta's input. This is chronicled here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/286868-black-ebonite-fountain-pen/

Now back to the pen. This pen is a unique design by itself. It is flush pen, made in matte finish with the top and bottom finials in polished ebonite. The size is comparable to a Lamy Safari design.

The pen is a comfortable size to hold and the balance is good. One doesnt feel the step down from the section to barrel. The pen cannot be posted.

Now to the most interesting thing, S-K gave me various options for nibs. He told he has some vintage NOS American nibs. I chose the "Curvex 14Ct. Gold plated nib". It is an upturned untipped Spoon nib. I have no idea or knowledge of this nib. Fellow FPNers can chime, if they have the details. The pen draws a moderately wet F line. The gold plated nib offers a surprising amount of line variation.

On the whole, I have got an unique pen with a unique nib and am happy with it. Kudos to Sreekumar and Vaibhav for making this pen happen

ETA: Some info thaks to Hari

An interesting take on the design of the Sheaffer Award, pics off the internet:

Reg the nib, Curvex seems to have been popular in India. I have documented one example here:

Pratap of Gem had a huge stock of these nibs. These are the so called untipped spoon nibs. Read more about them here: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=ref/glossary/S.htm

scroll down to spoon nibs.

Thanks for info, Hari. I know I could count on you. updated on the original. Now I can see the resemblance between the Sheaffer and Vaib pen. I dont think S-K or Vaibhav took inspiration from Sheaffer

Yes, of course, I agree.

I just wanted to inform that it may not be unique. :)

Fine. Hari, how has been your experience with the Curvex nib. IMO, it offers considerable line variation and writes with a hint of feedback

Fair enough. I meant "unique" in the context of traditional Indian ebonite pens, as far I know

I have been gifted this pen and the words to describe the experience of the nib when it touches the paper is non-reproducable by words but pure emotions. The feeling of writing in this nib is out of this world the lesser the pressure the greater the comfort, there is a push back communication from the nib while writing, it asks you to calm down and relax ... this was not my out of box experience, it took me 5 to 10 minutes and i cannot believe it this is by far the best nib experience i have ever had ... reached out to SK for another pen with this nib ! I need this one badly ... thanks Vig, thank you

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
