Amethyst - Pelikan Edelstein

I have mixed feelings about Edelstein a s a line. The inks aren't bad. But they're not as good as the price tag would suggest. On the other hand Pelikan does a great job communicating with pen enthusiasts and engaging them in activities (Pelikan Hub, creating the color of the ink of the year).

I was a little disaoppointeh that it was violet and not brown chosen for the ink of theyear 2015. Happily the brown will come next year.

I've received the bottle of Amethyst and after playing with it for some time I can say I sort of like it. The flow is good, the color is fairly saturated and enjoyable and it shows some waterproofness. Is it worth its price? Well, that's the question everyone has to answet to him/herself.

Thanks for your reviews! :)

I am very fond of the Edelstein collection in general, and this one seems a nice addition to the line.

One of my all time favorite inks is Turmaline and I just wish that they would consider adding it to their permanent line.

I am way offtopic here, but do you have any official info on 2016's IOY? Is it really gonna be brown?

I have signed up for Pelikan's newsletter, but I always feel like I am the last to know... :S

Love this ink. I have it in my M215 with a Fine and it just loves the stuff! Great flow and great colour with equally great shading in my experience. I bought a second bottle because I was worried it would be gone! The scans are very true to the colour on my screen

I'm glad someone finally reviewed this ink (and you do that so well), so I could slip the tree in here.

I agree that I sort of like it and am glad I found it from Germany at a price that is half what it runs for in Canada.... (Seriously...$40+tx? + shipping). For those Canucks who are interested:

AND I THANK YOU for another beautiful tree! And glad to know someone else has enjoyed the Seitz Global ink source. Especially when I have had it for probably 2 months & remain amused when the American distributors are "announcing" it's arrival (@ their higher prices!)

Do you find that the Edelstein inks tend to be quite wet? A salesperson in a brick-and-mortar store advised me the other day that whereas the Pelikan 4001 inks are dry, the Edelstein inks are among the wettest available.

My experience has been the polar opposite; the Pelikan Edelstein inks that I have (Aventurine, Mandarin, and Amethyst) are all dry, especially the latter. In fact, Amethyst would not write at all with a Parker 75 with an OBB CI nib, yet the pen writes freely with both J Herbin and Diamine inks.

The Edelstein Amethyst is a wonderful, rich purple red for those of us who like writing in that sort of colour. A close comparison is the Diamine Tyrian Purple, which is (a) cheaper and (B) readily available.

How I wish Pelikan would stop bringing gorgeous inks onto the market and then discontinuing them. I know why they do this (to create a need, a rarity and make people buy them etc.) but it is a very frustrating marketing ploy.

Happily (and selfishly, I admit) I have managed to gather 7 bottles of this ink and about 12 packs of cartridges from different pen shops in Asia and Europe I have visited on business travel, and so probably have enough Amethyst ink to last me for many years.

But we Pelikan ink enthusiasts really should start a petition to the manufacturers to demand the continuation of popular inks!

7 bottles holy smokes! Sadly, I missed out on this ink and now I really want it, but as you said, it is no longer available and impossible to find.

The pen was even prettier.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Still on my wish list...not holding my breath...but I am convinced that one day I will own a Pelikan Amethyst.

Amethyst was ok but then Lamy did Dark Lilac which eclipsed it :)

Which Edel got revived, was it Aquamarine?

Since writing my comment in July 2017 (see above), I have acquired the Amethyst 200 pen and two more bottles of the ink and ten packs of the cartridges. As I now have 9 bottles (one sadly getting close to half empty...) I think I have enough to last me for a very long time.... LOL

It is still one of my all-time favourite inks, although if in need, Diamine Tyrian Purple or Mont Blanc Lavender Purple are near substitutes.

What a pity Pelikan did not make this one of their permanently available inks.

I find that MB Lavender is a tiiiiny bit darker and doesn't shade as much. It's an ok substitute, but Amethyst is THE best.

Do you think we could start a petition for Pelikan to bring it back?

(edit: just read above that indeed you agree. we should do something about that)

@Tamiya. Yes, Aquamarine made it to the regular line. I was pretty surprised, to be honest.

Ok folks, I have a chance to grab a bottle of this but already own Diamine Tyrian Purple, MB Lavender Purple and Herbin Poussiere deLune. Is Pelikan Amethyst really different enough from these other three to justify paying a premium price for it?

I wouldn't go paying crazy price for Amethyst... unlike Dark Lilac, yeah that's nearly worth going crazy for :)

PdL can differ with batch, some bluer others browner. It's too softspoken & Amethyst barely shouts either; I guess I prefer something louder like 4001 Violet or Watermans Tender Purple when not dipping into the big guns Lamy.

Thanks for the advice. The price isn't too high, I have a chance to grab Amethyst for around US$23, but I just don't want to have too much overlap with similar colors.

I was able to grab probably the last bottle of Dark Lilac in China and it is just amazing. I've got my L2K BB filled with it right now and it's distractingly gorgeous on the page.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
