New Mabie Todd Brand Owned By Fountain Pen Hospital

Recommended Posts

I emailed Fountain Pen Hospital to ask about who makes the new Mabie Todd pens.

Here is the reply I received:

Hi,

Fountain Pen Hospital is now the owner of the brand.

Please let us know if we may assist you further.

Interesting. I wonder did they buy only the rights to the defunct US Company which was separate from the English side from 1916. The latter would have been acquired by the Biro Company, which in turn was acquired by BIC. I wonder if Bic retained the rights to the name?

If I were a multi-millionaire, it would be quite fun to start up Mabie Todd in England, hire a few craftsmen and run a nice little tax loss making proper Swans.

Some we have had the second coming and going of Conway and Mentmore, With Esterbrook, Mabie Todd, and Onoto currently fighting for market share (apparently).

Will we eventually see a relaunch of Platignum, Osmiroid, or Nova ;-)

Hmmm, the US Patent & Trademark Office shows FPH as the last listed owner of the MT trademark, but also says that the trademark has been dead since June 2014. So there's hope for Cob's plan to revive the brand after all...

OK but who makes them.

According to this thread, FPH said they're made in Taiwan. $10 pens with a $375 price tag - such is the power of the MT brand!

At least they have the decency - as far as I can see - not to call them Swans.

I vaguely recall hearing that the "Swan" brand is held by someone other than FPH (perhaps in Europe?)

Proust owns it from what I remember.

How about we start a new brand in homage to Swan?

Make it like the Wahl Eversharp revival with high quality pens that are in the style of the "traditional" pen.

I suggest names such as

"Egret"

"Trumpeter"

"Cormorant"

"Heron"

Announcing pens by:

"Maybe, Maybe Not" LLC Inc.

Puveyor of our famous pen models: The Trumpter. You will want to announce to your friends that you bought one

The Egret economy line. We promise you will have no ®egrets if you buy this one!

With ideas like that I foresee prosperity ahead!

And we cannot I suppose have Jackdaw, but I suppose Raven, Crow, Rook, Magpie, Jay and Chough should be available.

Jay nib - quite good...

"I AM a Swan!"

We can imprint on the Ugly Duckling pen "I AM a Swan!" if you like.

I would love to have an ebonite pen with Raven imprinted on the barrel.

The logo is a nib with wings. I drew it but I am away from computer. Will post it later.

Those Fountain pen hospital pens are true ugly ducklings masquerading as elegant birds.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
