I'm just getting up to speed making wood pens (just kits for now), and I'm looking for someone who can do laser engraving on the turned wooden barrels. Any suggestions?

There are several folks who can do this hanging out over on the Woodbarter.com forum. It's a great place to find beautiful wood, the folks are very friendly. Just post a message introducing yourself first, then do a search to see who has asked/answered that question in the past.

Thanks! I just created an account there, I'll introduce myself as soon as it gets approved.

It's been a long time since I joined, I don't remember there being any wait for approval. Try logging in with the user name and password you created for yourself, then just see if you can make a post in the Introductions section ... link to intros subforum

I did have to be approved, but that came very quickly. Now I'm having another issue. I posted an introduction and then did a search for pen engraving (and found a ton of hits), but it tells me I have insufficient priviledges to reply to any of the threads, including my own introduction. I don't seem to have the ability to start a private message conversation with anyone either, that option isn't there when I click on usernames. Any suggestions?

I'll go take a look and tag the site admin, he can usually take care of this sort of thing ...

Wow, those are cheap! I'd be concerned that might be one of those "you get what you pay for" situations.

A wood turner friend of mine in Little Rock loves his. Says he gets really good results on wood. Hasn't tried plastics yet.

That's good to know. And he engraves his pens? On WoodBarter there seemed to be an issue with needing a rotary attachment to get good results on pen barrels because of their relatively small radius.

A more expensive route is this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-AXIS-3020-CNC-ROUTER-ENGRAVER-ENGRAVING-DRILLING-MILLING-WOODWORKING-EXCELLENT-/231622924226

+ Mach 3 + CamBam (http://www.cambam.info/ for a deal on buying Mach3 + Cambam together) + my free G Code Wrapper ( http://www.chestnutpens.co.uk/misc/gcodewrapper.html ), but it will give you full 4 axis capability.

Regards,

Richard.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
