[OFF-TOPIC MODE ON]

Sorry, but today I'm writing with a old Olivetti (Underwood) Lettera 32 typewriter....

carretera, that is a lovely typewriter! That colour is very groovy!

It reminds me of an episode from House of Cards when President Underwood types a letter using an Underwood typewriter. I remember trying to figure out what type of pen he used to sign the letter after he pulled the sheet out of his typewriter, but I couldn't see very clearly.

Andrew, I really enjoy seeing your work with pointy tipped pens, but also now with edged nibs!

Finding fountain pens to give as gifts is always hard, isn't it? Not that I've given them to people often.

I did gift my parents a matching pair of Pilot Custom Heritage 92 in different colours, because my dad was intrigued by piston filing pens when I took my pens with me when I visited them the last time. He was an academic and he had used fountain pens in the past (my parents were the ones who gave me my very first fountain pen 20+ years ago!) but he never used piston fillers before so he was curious. At least he's still using it the last I heard, so that's good. My mum has abandoned hers, and gone back to her rollerball, but he's using hers now too, so all's well. :)

Finding matching vintage pens will be harder, but pens like Esterbrooks and Parkers are still quite widely available so good luck! I hope the recipients will appreciate the pens, and the thought you are putting into to find the pens for them.

Interesting pen :)

So is everything except the barrel salvaged from an original MB?

Not really, Shawn did everything, and the clip was made specially for the pen :)

Thanks for tip. I'll try to find this episode of House of Cards.

:)

Today, just a few scribbles from my drawing pen.

I like this kind of mix. Modern pen with vintage soul (nib). And your drawing with flex is very nice.

Nice pen!

A new modification to the feed. More ink flow and a nib mod, a breather hole. This makes all the difference in achieving wet wet wet noodler nibs.

My Reform 1745 "Frankened" A Morton dip flex nib. Nib was rescued from eBay. Now with renewed life. And bottle free until next refill x)

So, you added a breather hole to the gold pen? How big? What did you use to make the hole? Pictures?

Today I was trying out a MonteVerde ink (Burgundy) that a colleague gave me. It's extremely wet, but works well otherwise for dip pens. I'm going to try cutting it half and half with water and see how it works. It's too wet for regular paper, but I have some thick cotton-ish paper and it's works really well there. It's extremely lubricated so the pen glides over the paper, but I was also using a wonderful big nib that's quite smooth already. It's so slippery that it is a little difficult to handle as is, and I got a bit of a blob at the bottom of the page, but I think when I cut it with water that will work.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
