Pelikan Leak Fixable?

My favorite Pelikan started leaking where indicated in the picture below. It doesn't drip or flow out...just gets all over my fingers when I write with it. A magnifying glass and some patient experimenting revealed the leak site at the seam between the colored portion of the barrel and the threads on the nib end.

I sent it to an experienced repair person who gave the pen a "tune-up" and sent it back to me. It still leaked. I talked to him and he said send the pen back. After awhile I got an email where he assured me it didn't leak - at least he couldn't make it leak (he was the expert after all). I told him I wasn't imaging it and while he didn't exactly say he thought I was imagining it - he sent the pen back. I hoped that something magical had happened in the mail and filled it up and started writing with it. Ink all over my fingers again as usual. Do I:

  1. Trash the pen (saving the nib). I have no idea how to remove it...I tried.
  2. Slather the leaking seam with super glue?
  3. Dismantle that joint (can it be pulled apart?) and re-glue everything?
  4. Suck it up and learn to live with Florida Blue fingers?
  5. Find a repair person who is actually willing to repair this subtle problem? Suggestions?

Send it to Pelikan. They will replace the barrel. Usually the repair is FOC, since this is a manufacturing defect.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

This is good advice - they did wonderful work on a pen i'd had for ten years. Perhaps send them an email describing the problem and include that photo....

International(at)pelikan.com or use the contact page on their website

Good luck!

Send it to Pelikan Germany - the UK agents are not the greatest.

There was a thread in the Pelikan section about a guy who had a red stripe one that the body had completely separated from the section.

Superglue won't work.

How silly of me. I never thought to send it back to Pelikan after having it for so many years.

I recently sent a pen (pictured below) back to Montegrappa for repair. I was filled with trepidation as I'd heard horror stories of people sending their Montegrappa to the factory to never see it again. I emailed them and they assured me that if that was ever the case it was a long time ago and would not happen now. As I couldn't find anyone to repair it, I sent it off to Italy. Apparently the customs form the US post office affixed to the package did not satisfy Italian customs and the pen was sequestered for about a month. Montegrappa interceded with Italian customs for me and finally got the pen released. They will repair it for $140. Seems steep to me since they likely don't have to fabricate anything; but I pay happily as this is for some reason my favorite writing, everyday in my pocket pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
