Bravo For Appelboom

I had a great experience shopping at Appelboom today -- so great that I ended up spending waaaaay more money that I probably should have with the DC Supershow approaching. Joost Appelboom went out of his way to contact a manufacturer to dig up some information, and as a result we both learned something.

Even better, as an American I don't have to pay the insane 21% Dutch sales tax. Never again will I complain about the state legislature raising our local sales tax another whopping 0.25%.

So I, at least, highly recommend his site!

I agree that Joost is great. I have had two orders from him and would happily buy again.

Well, don't keep us in suspense, tell! Show!

I will when they arrive. :D One is as close to my "ultimate dream pen" as I ever expect to get*, and cost the most I'll probably ever spend on a pen. The other one is just really cool (at least in my eyes ;) ). This definitely cuts into my DC Supershow budget, but it was worth it.

I just received my first purchase from Joost, a B nib Stresemann, best price, fast shipping and great communication, highly recommended.

What did you buy?

Two Caran d'Ache pens:

--Year of the Dragon -- beautiful red on black design, accented with gold

--Caelograph Sirius -- the aforementioned "ultimate dream pen." I wish I could get a Zenith, which looks even better, but I don't have $88,000 lying around. :( To keep within budget in light of this, aside from the DC pen show I'm going to do my best to cool it on pen purchases for the rest of the year... unless I see a real bargain.... :o

My package from Appelboom arrived even quicker than expected. Not only did I get two magnificent pens, but the esteemed Mr. Appelboom also added a bottle of ink, a Paperblanks book, and a lovely handwritten note. Top-notch service!

The knight's available at ThinkGeek for $30 + S&H. I keep wanting to get like 11 more and arrange my own little Pen Knights of the Round Table on my desk. ;)

A $5000 pen.

I don't think I have ever actually seen $5000 in real life.

The pen is a beauty though.

Another happy customer here. After a Caran d'Ache Leman, I've bought another pen from them yesterday night, a Lamy Dialog Piano Black. Like my first experience, I was impressed by the quality of their service: I had a very practical question concerning the checkout process, and they almost immediately answered (and helped!) me via WhatsApp late in the evening! Remarkable.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
